Gaara listened without comment, his light eyes never leaving the other’s face. California – that name sounded familiar, but not in firsthand practice. If Luke was disturbed by attempts of murder alone… then the facility would have been much harder on his mental state. For some, death was preferable, to the types of experiments that were conducted on the general populace. It was a horrific place, run by sadistic individuals hell-bent on breaking their test subjects.

Then again, perhaps for Luke, death was considered the worst outcome, rather than instances of physical and mental torture. Judging by his reaction, he bore emotional scars from his imprisonment at this hotel, however long it had been. So, once again, the night was feared. Darkness was considered to be the source of evil. Gaara wisely concealed the small note of amusement that he felt, at this familiar stipulation.

He nodded at the end of Luke’s explanation, and attempted to appear sympathetic. Death didn’t truly perturb him, though he understood that many people were on the opposite end of that spectrum. “It was a game, to those in-charge,” he muttered with a clear edge of disdain, “They utilized these tactics in order to control their victims. Their methods are crude, at best. Effective, but with little room for varying results.”

Which, in his opinion, was useless. If the subjects were all left defenseless, then the results could be predicted much more easily. That seemed… rather tedious.

After a moment of hesitation, Gaara nodded, though it wasn’t necessarily in agreement. He should desire a safe return for all of the residents in the facility. (Except a few of the villainous types, perhaps.) And this empty, hollow feeling – it didn’t exist. He refused to let it surface, through sheer force of will. He wouldn’t allow himself to be affected by it.

His features quickly shifted back to their default neutral, even as he was wondering how he should respond. If he said it was nice to meet Luke, well. That wouldn’t be the truth, because they had been acquainted, once before. “I see,” he finally answered. Not very informative or particularly enthusiastic, but social interaction was still an attribute he needed to improve on.

“I haven’t spoken to the workers of this city. I do not trust them. This city doesn’t seem to be as dangerous as previous locations,” he remarked in his customary calm demeanor, “Though, I could be proven wrong. I intend to validate the information presented in the pamphlet, beginning with the living arrangements.”
