Although Diarmuid doesn't appear to be in distress--he seems fairly happy about the dog tackling him--the soldier doesn't think that being held down like that is conducive to much of anything. He sets his now-empty bowl down and reaches over to lift the puppy with a relatively gentle grip and set it back down onto the floor.
