[The Mark 42 isn't Tony's best armor. It really isn't. At best it has some cool extra bells and whistles. At worst, it's a pile of really expensive paperweights. Well, that's the theory, at least. Whether it's due to the recent technological weirdness in Saeng Seong, some malfunction that comes from being built by a man who didn't sleep for 72 hours, or a different malfunction from the same man tinkering for nearly a year, something in the Mark 42's programming goes wrong. Unfortunately, it goes wrong at the expense of one former brainwashed assassin (tentatively) named Bucky Barnes.
It's a series of malfunctions, really. The first was the suit's internal A.I. deciding to patrol the city. Maybe it's some weird approximation of muscle memory--Tony flies around, so the Mark 42 flies around. Maybe the A.I. is just stupid. It's not important.
What is important is that it's recognized Bucky as a threat. Because that explains why it's aiming and firing a missile at his current position.]
