Intro Log - September 2014

Who: Everyone
Where: The Welcome Center
When: 15th September, late afternoon
Summary: The new arrivals, freshly pulled from their worlds or others, awaken in a strange place...
Warnings: Inbox death may occur. System overload at own risk. NPC responses may be slow.

It's a shuddering breath, a sensation of being pulled to elsewhere and finding oneself pressed against something on the soft and some place cozy. However, before one can fully stir, there is and odd, warm stirring sensation that lifts you up from wherever you've been dropped, when you begin to drift off once more.

'I'm sorry for this... but we need your help.'

Yet the feeling -and the voice - pass quickly, and when you awaken, you begin to realize your surroundings. It's a small room with what some might recognize as a Far Eastern theme when it comes to decor, from the walls to the sofa (or bed) you find yourself on. Illumination is provided by carefully crafted lamps, and even a candle flickering on a nearby desk. The doors are made from paper and wood, with a thin frame; through them it's easy to hear other people stirring, talking, or coming to.

You are not alone...

On a small table beside you, there rests a note atop a manilla envelope. Unfolding the note will reveal some answers in the form of a letter addressed to all arrivals.

Welcome to Saeng Seong (it's pronounced sang see-oung if the name seems really strange)!

You are among a new group of arrivals to our city, from many far-apart worlds.
We have gathered you here because our city is in a crisis, and we are at our last resorts. The energy of the city is in a slow downward spiral, and is dangerously close to expiring altogether. Though with the help of other new arrivals like yourself, the situation is beginning to seem less dim. If you are wondering how this is, allow me to explain.

One hundred years ago, there was a terrible incident known as the Unleashing; an event that sent our world into what would have been a slow and painful end were it not for the quick response of a few. However in the process, our own energies have been left to maintain what is causing this energy crisis. We do not have enough to push back this plague on our own.

That's where you come in - you and everyone else we've brought to the city. Unlike those of us here, you have the potential to generate the energy the city needs, but you'll need to work together to do it.

Why? Because the energy can only be generated when two people touch each other. Any touch will do, but it must be between two of you who are new to the city. If you don't keep in contact with someone, eventually your energy will begin to drain as well, making you dangerously ill.

A few other things:

The closed-off sections of the city are closed off for a reason; approaching them will cause your energy to drain very rapidly. We're working to open the rest of the city to you as soon as we can, but for now, please remain within the first five districts of the city.

You have been given a key to a one-bedroom apartment in a complex set aside for you and the other new arrivals, near the riverside in the 1st district. You're free to change your living quarters whenever you like, and we encourage you to move in with someone in one of the larger apartments. When you want to change, just come back to this building to exchange your key.

We've also included a cash card with a living stipend; if you're unfamiliar with this system, or the network established for new arrivals, you can talk to Andi in the lobby for help. It's what she's here for. If you need medical assistance, contact Mai, one of our doctors.

Again, welcome, and thank you for all your help. Please come downstairs to the lobby for refreshments. If you have any questions, there will be others downstairs to assist you.

Irene
Arrival Liaison

Inside the manilla envelope , you will find: a ring with a key and apartment number on it, some kind of cash card, a map and informational guide to the city, and a second letter folded neatly on the top--

Honoured Guest,

First of all, I would like to second my colleague's welcome to our city with my own. Many have come to this world whether by choice or by our actions, and for my own involvement I humbly ask your forgiveness for potentially pulling you from your homes and loved ones. However, it is as Irene's letter states. We are in an energy crisis, and only you and your fellow new arrivals can aide us.

One hundred one years have passed since the event known as the Unleashing tore a rift in our world with Saeng Seong at its core. Ever since, we have had no word from the outside... until recently.

During the celebration of the autumnal festival last year, we were visited by spirits who perished in the Unleashing and demons. This was to be expected as in our world, the boundaries betwixt the living world and the spiritual wane towards the final day of the festival. However, the events to follow were not. As winter and the very rare snowfalls began, so too did snowmen come alive as bid by a dark magic. Some mages who align themselves with a faction named Rangar saw fit to seize the opportunity for mayhem, and the city suffered for it. However, in this and the following hackings into our citywide network, we have come to learn that there are still others who live outside the walls. Yet they too cannot sustain the energy levels needed to close this rift once and for all.

New friend, I cannot understate our need nor the truth in Irene's letter to you, but there are some in this city you should not trust. Who you do or do not trust is up to your own judgment (even mine is albeit clouded at times), yet I urge you caution. Every side has their own agenda, and even our different factions may be splintered into different parties like the individuals that make them. Though should you ever find need to seek solace or sanctuary, the temple doors are always open.

Rhea,
High Priestess to the Four
Arrival Liason

Odd... Neither were written in your own language, and yet you find it easily understandable. Soon enough, if you don't make an exit on your own, there's a gentle knocking on the door as someone comes from downstairs to usher you along.

"Welcome to Saeng Seong! I know you must be confused or upset as to what's going on, but we promise to explain ourselves further once you've had a chance to stretch your legs!"

Whether you go downstairs immediately or linger a little longer, eventually you must come on down to leave the small space, and sooner rather than later would probably be better. You'll find yourself in a well-lit lobby, filled with comfortable-looking couches and chairs. Along one wall are refreshment tables, loaded with all sorts of cool and relieving food and drink, including some you probably aren't familiar with. It's just as well they're in good supply, as the windows outside show a city well heated from a summer sun.

On the wall opposite are a pair of desks, each with a sign, and one person at her station-

Rhea, General Assistance
Andi, Technological Assistance

The plaques have a shiny semi-new look to them, as do the desks. Both lovely ladies seem eager to assist you, though one more.... self-contained than the one bouncing in their seat with anticipation.

Outside, and through the translucent glass you can see a banner hanging from the tiled roof of the building across the street. The cheerful colors on it match well against a bright blue sky:

WELCOME TO SAENG SEONG
(ENJOY YOUR STAY!)

For a moment Czes was too startled to speak. From the 40s to the 2000s...Czes knew Steve wasn't an immortal because he had been able to speak part of a fake name in his presence. But then how could what he was saying be true? Could Steve be a different kind of immortal?

After taking a beat too long to process that line of thought, Czeslaw's mouth finally caught up with his brain.

"So," he said slowly, testing the waters, "you're a lot older than you look, huh, Mister Rogers?"

[There's a small nervous laugh, as Rudy ruffles the back of his head. Saeng Seong was definitely unique, and he's made a few interesting friends, but he wasn't sure if he could ever call it "home" like Filgaia.]

Well, I wouldn't say live but I've been staying here a bit. Like mostly everyone else here. [His smile briefly tenses, eyes showing concern for the boy.] This place is kind of different, see. Did you get the letter explaining the situation, or...?

[Perfect material for Eiko to walk all over clearly. She's still got her hands on her hips, looking him over as her frown deepens.]

Does it look like I'm okay?! That hurt, you know! [She huffs!] You just smacked right into me!

"Not an individual name, no. The species is known as Dragonite, so that's what I call them."

Once they're outside under the sky, and have put a few feet between them and the door, he pulls a red-and-white plastic ball out of his labcoat pocket. When he taps the button, the ball expands from a walnut/golf ball size to a grapefruit/baseball size, and he tosses it into the air. The ball opens in half, and a mass of light escapes it before the ball closes and returns to his hand. Meanwhile, the light quickly turns solid, forming the shape of a dragon hovering in the air.

"Doesn't sound too different from home." Raphael refrained from rolling his eyes but he uttered a 'tch' sort of noise. It sounded like a bunch of politics to him. And people being stupid in the face of the demise of their own world.

"Well, I got my weapons and my fists so I'm all ready to go." He eyed Donatello's duffel bag. Who knew what his brother was cooking up to put in there? "Really? I woulda thought that you'd be all excited with all the fancy techno stuff." If the level of technology here was going so far as to make his brother worried - that was saying something.

"Huh..." He muttered. Don had a point. The whole 'secret lab' thing was disturbing. He remembered that time they had gone underground and found an abandoned genetics lab that had been run by the Foot - and the monsters they had created from unwilling subjects. "Well we've been through a buncha crazy stuff before. I'm sure we got this." He encouraged.

"So ya got a place here? They gave me keys for an apartment somewhere."
sai2yourface: ([2003] Yeah you got a problem?)

[personal profile] sai2yourface 2014-09-28 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, I'm down with that. I gotta map and stuff but I just arrived. I still haveta explore and see what's here." Raphael grinned at the idea of finding the pizza place. "Making it is fun, but I'm not as good at makin' it as my brother Mikey." He'd rather just eat it if he was honest with himself. He wasn't as much of a foodie.

"Sorry ta hear about yer pal." Raph frowned slightly. So people got sick if they didn't touch enough...and sometimes they got sick anyway? Man this place was weird. The surly ninja was a bit disconcerted and maybe a little awkward about it too. He wasn't really the huggy snuggly type. This place was somewhat going to push his boundaries.

Raphael took the sai back, twirling it in his hand and reverse gripped it against his forearm with long familiarity. The other one was soon in his other hand the same way. It was a quiet comfort to hold them.

"Don't like the cold huh? Yeah working out when it's freezin' kinda sucks." He agreed. "I'm sure this place gotta gym or somethin' somewhere. Most cities do."
noparachute: (Did you mean that?)

"Usually the symptoms appear after a week or so of no physical contact. People with powers start losin' control of them and a few days after, they become ill. Nothing too big, just similar to a cold, but wouldn't want to have that last long."

Steve's never really dealt with it himself, but he's definitely seen others that had to go through it. Sorta of a huge bother, but guess it really forces people to go along with this physical contact thing. Steve himself would want to be as healthy as possible all the time when dealing with a foreign world.

"What type of illnesses you get?" Steve is all too familiar with getting sick a lot, even though he doesn't have to worry about it anymore.
noparachute: (Hear you there)

[personal profile] noparachute 2014-09-28 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Steve takes his question as just plain old curiosity, what he said was pretty strange after all. He's getting a little more comfortable talking about the ice and what he's lost too, even though he doesn't really talk about it too much at length. The pain's still there, but he's slowly dealing with it. Helps that he now has Bucky and Sam and Natasha to trust.

Guess Stark counts too.

"95." Steve tries to sound a little nonchalant about it all. "Some might say that it doesn't fully count though, been asleep for about 70 of those years."

"The 'fancy techno stuff' is exciting when I have it or someone I trust has it. When a a mysterious society that thinks kidnapping kids to save their own shells has it, then I start to worry about what else they can do with it."

Donatello's frown fades away into a smile as Raphael insists that they'll be okay. "Yeah, definitely! With the f-" Shell. "I mean, with the two of us, plus our new friends here, we can handle anything that comes our way."

"Oh, yeah, they assigned me an apartment. I can make room for you, too, if you want. I need to organize my lab space better, anyway."

"If you show me your map, I can probably point out where the shop is! That way you can find it when you go exploring! Donatello told me that Leonardo is really good at fighting and is your leader and stuff. What is Mikey like?" A curious look fills Diarmuid's eyes, "Besides being a good cook?"

"Thank you. I miss him, but he wouldn't want me to be sad, so I keep doing what I can and focus on the happy times we had!" Diarmuid watches as Raphael holds his weapons. The motion seems familiar as he knows he has drawn comfort from his weapons before. Hopefully, whatever thoughts are making the turtle uncomfortable pass soon.

"When I saw the snow last year, it was only the second time I ever saw snow. It gets cold where I am from, but we don't really get a lot of snow. The one time I saw snow away from here was when my father made it snow!"

"Generally it is the team of scientists who are granted access to the project. However sometimes there are... cases... in which they allow me to select a few in need."

"I'm fine, Kit. Thank you for your concern." She managed a more sincere smile. "It has been a long week."

Kit nodded. "It must be hard work bringing people here from all over," she said. She had no idea how it was done, other than 'magic', and probably wouldn't understand it even if someone tried to explain it to her. But summoning people from different worlds couldn't be easy.

"That's why I decided to make you something that I thought might cheer you up," Kit said, opening the purple bag tied to her belt and pulling out something wrapped in a white cloth, setting it on Rhea's desk. Opening the cloth wrapping would reveal a small roundish loaf of brown bread that smelled pleasantly sweet.

"It's fruit bread," Kit explained, smiling. "We usually make it around the winter holiday where I'm from, but it's good any time. And sharing it with someone is supposed to be good luck, both for you and the person you're sharing it with."
alley_kit: (Cute with flupe)

[personal profile] alley_kit 2014-09-29 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Yep!", Kit said. "I'm a Thundercat. My brother and most of my friends back home are too. We've been making other friends all over Third Earth, though."

"And yeah, 'Third Earth' is what my world is called," she said. "Even though I don't think there's a First or Second anywhere. Don said that your world is called that too, but they're two different places."

"I'm not a mutant though, just a cat," she explained as they shook hands. "Don said that the animal tribes don't exist where you're from though, so it's OK if you don't know."

"And it's nice to meet you too," Kit said. "I'm glad I could help. I know how hard it is, being away from your family and everything, so I try and help people out when I can."

His jaw tenses and he narrows his eyes for a fraction of a second, wondering. He doesn't want to think Rhea is responsible, but it's a possibility.

"You shouldn't be bringing children in."

Especially considering the one he just encountered who seemed so terrified he ran before Bucky could get more than a few words in. Do you want to scare little kids like that by taking them from their homes, Rhea? Do you??

Some of the tension visibly leaves his shoulders. It's a reassurance that Rhea isn't a part of it, and that the scientists of this place need to be stopped, or at least hindered. He doesn't like doubting the things he thinks he knows.

After a brief glance at the surroundings, his eyes return to the woman, and though she looks to be in better condition than the soldier at the moment, it's still not optimal.

"You look tired."

This is his way of asking if she's okay. It's a pretty big step forward for him.

[personal profile] rekindlenpcs 2014-09-29 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
"A little," she replies meekly, clasping her hands together atop her desk. "They have been keeping me up longer than usual."
heismymission: it has to be. right? maybe? (c: this is bs)

[personal profile] heismymission 2014-09-29 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
A faint crease appears between his brows as he considers it. They, the scientists? He isn't really aware of what they ask of her, other than the assistance in bringing outsiders here, he realizes. There's so much he doesn't know about the situation.

He lowers the volume of his voice a level, not certain if the topic may be something others aren't supposed to know.

"Why?"
rekindlenpcs: (Rhea)

[personal profile] rekindlenpcs 2014-09-29 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know."

That's all she could say audibly, but after a second's pause she glances down at her clasped hands.

"There are gaps in what I recollect from my time in the labs, holes that I cannot grasp to fill. All I can remember is an exercise that they tried to get me to complete so that I may speak to others before bringing them here being interrupted by screams. The rest is blank."

It takes Bucky a moment to process the words Rhea is sending him.

If he had been touching that desk, it would have been in splinters at the moment he finally does. The only conclusion he can come to is that they are making her to do their bidding and forcibly removing her memories of it. And the screams... he doesn't know if he wants to know their origin. He doesn't know which answer to that question would make him more angry.

The muscles in his jaw jump as he forces himself to remain still, though the sounds of his mechanical arm give him away, whirring as if to charge up for a strike as he clenches his fists. He takes two deep breaths through his nose and swallows before finally responding. His eyes are dark, bitter.

"I know what that's like."
rekindlenpcs: (Rhea)

[personal profile] rekindlenpcs 2014-09-29 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
She nods faintly before looking up to meet his gaze. There is a bit of fear--not of him, but another power--but the bitterness is mutual. Though it looks like she's searching for something before finally responding.

"Perhaps we should speak of this elsewhere." Her eyes briefly look a little to his right, where a guard is glancing at them, before moving to stand and switch her sign to say "out to lunch".

The soldier gives Rhea a serious nod before taking a step back and out of the way of her and any of the doors, knowing she's likely to be watched in most places, especially here where the security is obvious enough. He's waiting to see where she goes before he follows alongside her.

Rhea moves almost gracefully for someone who is sleep deprived, albeit not with as much sluggishness as she would had there not been goddesses knows how much coffee involved. Though just as they were about to exit the door, she mutters quietly: "Put your arm around my shoulders."

The guard was already moving to follow them.
heismymission: we have to do this shit again (d: are you kidding me)

[personal profile] heismymission 2014-09-29 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Though he's not certain of the reason behind it, he follows the order without question, bringing his arm around her so his bandaged hand hangs over her shoulder and quickly matching the cadence of her step. He hasn't missed the set of footsteps behind them, and while he's good at evading guards alone, this is Rhea's home territory--she knows it and the way people here work better than he does.
