A Story and a Song...
Who: Diarmuid Ua Duibhne (
smallspot ) and anyone who wants to run into a cute little kid.
Where: An open grassy area near Building One.
When: 8-19, in the afternoon
Format: Starting in prose, but please use whatever you want to reply!
Summary: There are a lot of fun ways to spend a warm afternoon, though, for a bitty knight the best way to spend it is...training! Oh, and sometimes stopping to sing songs to his 'family.'
Warnings: Cuteness?
For once Diarmuid is using his cloak as something other than a blanket. Right now, he is carefully spreading it out on the grass so that he can set his new toys on it. With him are three small stuffed animals he got at the end of the festival--two adult swans and a baby one.
"Here is the father swan," Diarmuid carefully sets the first of the adult swans onto the cloak--the one he has picked to represent his foster father, Aengus. He then sets the other adult swan next to the first, this one representing his foster mother, Caer, "And here is the mother swan! And here is the baby swan who isn't lost anymore!" The boy sets the baby swan in front of the two adults and then jumps up and claps his hands happily.
"Now the whole family is together again! Watch me, Father! Watch me, Mother! I'll show you what everyone has been teaching me while I've been away!" The boy bows to the toys and then picks his practice sword up off the ground. He takes a few steps away before starting to practice the new sword moves he's been taught by Suzaku and some of the others who have offered to train him.
He knows that the toys aren't really his family, of course, but over the last few days he's been more homesick than usual and talking to them like they are helps for some reason. Once he's practiced for a while, Diarmuid will sit down by the toys for a rest and to sing some happy songs to his 'family.' After a few songs, he will jump up and start practicing again. Diarmuid isn't really paying attention to anything going on around him, but he will be happy to talk to anyone who approaches him and be even happier should anyone decide they want to train along with him.

Yes, please! Don't drop my things!
[He holds out his hands so he can take the cloak bundle back from Zack.]
It wasn't really magic, but it seemed that way when I first saw someone do it. We don't lock things up like this were I am from. I didn't know what a lock was until Lord Auron told me. I wonder why your worlds share words if the aren't the same.
[The boy seems to ponder this for a moment and then shrugs.]
There is all kinds of magic at work here. I suppose the answer could be anything!

[ He's not going to drop anything of someone else's so carelessly. Instead he gingerly deposits the bundle back in Diarmuid's outstretched arms, careful not to unbalance him where he stands. (Which Zack assumes would be very easy, in spite of his good balance, given the rather extreme height and weight discrepancy between them.)
As he stands back up, he shakes his head. ]
Beats me, too. Even this place doesn't really feel like an alien planet, when I think about it. For everything that's different, there's something that's kinda familiar...
I guess people really are the same, no matter where you go. ...Though magic's always a possibility.

[Okay, so the little guy doesn't know what a rhetorical question is yet. He's six.]
That's the kind of person you are! Come on! Lets go inside!
[Diarmuid waves toward his room the best he can with his full hands and then ducks inside. Once inside, he will head to the table--which has several open bags of candy on it--to put his practice sword on it. After that, he heads over to his bed and the nest of blankets he sleeps in. He'll crawl up onto the bed and start putting his swans up in the corner of it before pausing to look back over his shoulder.]
The tunnel is in the wall behind the table, Zack. See it?
[He points and sure enough, back behind the table in the wall that separates Cu Chulainn's room from his is a child-size roughly round hole in the wall. One that obviously wasn't part of the original construction of the room.]

[ He crosses the room, not feeling too out of place in the similar layout to his own, and stops next to the table. Planting a hand on it, he leans over to look underneath, after a quick glance verifies there's nothing to either side. ]
Huh! It really is a tunnel.
[ And he's a little more genuinely impressed by this than by the magic door-unlocking trick. It looks like the kid just plowed on through - understandably, on an emotional level, in a situation like this, but still a pretty big job for a purportedly little kid. ] How'd he do it?
no subject
[Diarmuid finishes putting his stuff away and hops down off the bed, running over to the tunnel and kneeling down next to it.]
He said that he just did it with his hands. Let me go see if he is home! He can explain more if he is.
[Without waiting for an answer, the boy disappears into the tunnel. He returns after just a few moments and shakes his head.]
Nope. He must be out playing.

[ For a moment, it's hard not to think of his own childhood - or to picture that old, miniature version of himself coming through the other side of that hole-in-the-wall tunnel. He'd certainly cut a few of his own through the jungle underbrush. A solid wall was something else, though.
He shakes his head, shrugging as he straightens back up and dismisses childhood memories from (literally) another life. ]
Well, we've got some errands to run, anyhow. Maybe we'll see him when we get back.

[Diarmuid climbs out of the hole and dusts his clothes off.]
I don't know if he actually keeps any food in his room. He doesn't know how to cook any better than I do. Well...
[The boy pauses a moment to think abut something before continuing.]
...maybe he knows how to cook over a fire. He's been out hunting already! But cooking over a fire is different than cooking with any of that stuff!
[He motions toward the stove and the microwave.]
Much different!
no subject
[ Oh boy. Well, it isn't like he hasn't already arbitrarily dedicated his day to this task. Shopping for one more kid shouldn't be too daunting a challenge for a SOLDIER.
(Who's never even really shopped much more than occasionally for himself, regardless of his own personal preference for eating right - not a lot of time, and even less space around the barracks and then the apartment he'd rarely ever been in.)
It's time for the Fistpump of DeterminationTM (which is really just an exaggerated physical tic Zack's never fully grown out of, as he socks his elbow into his side and closes his hand on empty air). ]
In that case, we'll just have to get enough for the both of you to stay well-stocked for a while. If I teach you how to make some easy meals, do you think you could show your friend, too?
no subject
[Actually, Diarmuid's not sure if it's a good idea for his friend to be cooking with how easily distracted he is, but the boy is too nice to actually say that.
He holds up his pouch toward Zack.]
I have my card and everything is put away. Should we get going?
no subject
[ To Zack's credit, he really isn't intending to teach any kids Diarmuid's age how to cook anything that requires more than maybe a little mixing and measuring (mostly harmless) and possibly the brief use of the microwave. He's not exactly a five-star chef, himself, and he's got no real aspirations to be, but he might have to rethink that, if there are many more kids around here subsisting entirely on candy and sandwiches.
He nods, motioning toward the door. ]
Let's get a move on. I don't know about you, but all this talk of food's starting to make me really hungry.
Shall we end and leave these two troublemakers to shop?
Yes! It's making me hungry too!
[Diarmuid bows and then reaches out for Zack's hand to pull him toward the door.]
Shopping here we come!
of course! o7
Hey, don't forget to lock up!
[ Even as he's voicing the caution, though, he reaches back to do it himself while on his way to being dragged out through the same door. ]
