INTRO LOG - JUNE 2014

Who: Everyone
Where: The Welcome Center
When: 18th June, late afternoon
Summary: The new arrivals, freshly pulled from their worlds or others, awaken in a strange place...
Warnings: Inbox death may occur. System overload at own risk. NPC responses may be slow.

It's a shuddering breath, a sensation of being pulled to elsewhere and finding oneself pressed against something on the soft and some place cozy. However, before one can fully stir, there is and odd, warm stirring sensation that lifts you up from wherever you've been dropped, when you begin to drift off once more.

Yet the feeling passes quickly, and when you awaken, you begin to realize your surroundings. It's a small room with what some might recognize as a Far Eastern theme when it comes to decor, from the walls to the sofa (or bed) you find yourself on. Illumination is provided by carefully crafted lamps, and even a candle flickering on a nearby desk. The doors are made from paper and wood, with a thin frame; through them it's easy to hear other people stirring, talking, or coming to.

You are not alone...

Close at hand there's a note that reads:

WELCOME CENTER
Newcomers: Please come downstairs to the lobby for refreshments and your welcome packets!

Odd... This wasn't written in your own language, and yet you find it easily understandable. Soon enough, if you don't enter on your own, there's a gentle knocking on the door as someone comes from downstairs to usher you along.

"Welcome to Saeng Seong! I know you must be confused as to where you are and what's going on, but we promise to explain this to you once you've had a chance to stretch your legs!"

Whether you go downstairs immediately or linger a little longer, eventually you must come down and get out of the small space, and sooner rather than later would probably be better. You'll find yourself in a well-lit lobby, filled with comfortable-looking couches and chairs. Along one wall are refreshment tables, loaded with all sorts of cool and relieving food and drink, including some you probably aren't familiar with. It's just as well they're in good supply, as the windows outside show a city well heated from a summer sun.

On the wall opposite are a pair of desks, each with a sign, and one person at her station-

Rhea, General Assistance
Andi, Technological Assistance

The plaques have a shiny new look to them, as do the desks. The one with 'Andi' listed appears to be empty, though. Gathered around both desks and several tables are boxes as well, and...Empty jars? The woman minding her desk doesn't appear to give them a second thought.

However, before you can go over and give at least one of them a piece of your mind and ask questions, the same person who ushered you downstairs hands you a manilla envelope that contains your welcome packet, urging you to read this before asking the two figures questions that the packet likely answers.

Inside it, you will find: a ring with a key and apartment number on it, some kind of cash card, a map and informational guide to the city, and a letter folded neatly on the top -

Welcome to Saeng Seong!

You are among a new group of arrivals to our city, from many far-apart worlds.
We have gathered you here because our city is in a crisis, and we are at our last resorts. The energy of the city is in a slow downward spiral, and is dangerously close to expiring altogether.

That's where you come in - you and everyone else we've brought to the city. Unlike those of us here, you have the potential to generate the energy the city needs, but you'll need to work together to do it.

Why? Because the energy can only be generated when two people touch each other. Any touch will do, but it must be between two of you who are new to the city. If you don't keep in contact with someone, eventually your energy will begin to drain as well, making you dangerously ill.

A few other things:

The closed-off sections of the city are closed off for a reason; approaching them will cause your energy to drain very rapidly. We're working to open the rest of the city to you as soon as we can, but for now, please remain within the first five districts of the city.

You have been given a key to a one-bedroom apartment in a complex set aside for you and the other new arrivals, near the riverside in the 1st district. You're free to change your living quarters whenever you like, and we encourage you to move in with someone in one of the larger apartments. When you want to change, just come back to this building to exchange your key.

We've also included a cash card with a living stipend; if you're unfamiliar with this system, or the network established for new arrivals, you can talk to Devin in the lobby for help. It's what he's here for. If you need medical assistance, contact Mai, one of our nurses.

Again, welcome, and thank you for all your help.

Irene Rhea
Arrival Liaison

Outside, and through the translucent glass you can see a banner hanging from the tiled roof of the building across the street. The cheerful colors on it match well against a bright blue sky:

WELCOME TO SAENG SEONG
(ENJOY YOUR STAY!)

"...They can't tell?" Granted, to the two of them it wouldn't seem unusual or even anything short of obvious. "Then again, if all these things I'm hearing about the guests all coming from 'different worlds' then maybe they just don't know a robot from a router."

Really, it made him a little glad he still went to the trouble of hiding the more robotic elements in his appearance... and made him wonder how much easier of a time Layer might have with doing it.

Her actual question to him, however... that was going to be a tougher one to answer. Whether a robot or human was asking, he wasn't fond of being grilled.

"I'm an early model," he replied rather bluntly. "Let's leave it at that."

When you worked around Zero, you could tell a blunt, unapproachable tone when you heard it. Her face darkened immediately. "Ah- I'm sorry. I could tell by looking at you that you were an early model and was curious as to how far back."

She wouldn't scan him and get a full diagnostic- how would you feel if you were being stared at and scrutinized?

"That... and you remind me of someone I know."

"Far enough back. Didn't think it was that obvious," he replied dryly. "Then again, I could tell you were new at a glance, too."

But her last few words left him answering before he could even think to formulate a better response. "Who?"

The more precise, articulate words came a few seconds later. "You don't know me. Trust me on this one."

[personal profile] bridgebunny 2014-06-22 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah- really?" She looked down at herself. Certainly, other than the New Generations, she was manufactured with the most advanced inner workings of the time to perform her assigned tasks.

"But I apologize, I really don't mean to pry. To answer your question, two of my friends are from... er, well, a different era entirely. The first, to be specific. It was Mega Man X that became the living blueprint for Dr. Cain's creation of the first Reploids after his creation over a hundred years prior."

"Mega Man X? Reploids...?"

She looked like she was from his world, but none of the... specifics seemed to line up. Did her records get scrambled, or was there some kind of strange knockoff going around he didn't know about?

"...Are you sure you don't mean Mega Man? Blue armor, saved the world from killer robots and mad scientists?"

[personal profile] bridgebunny 2014-06-24 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't believe I'm mistaken, no. X has done a great deal against irregulars as well. But..." She paused. How would she go about this?

"I don't believe you're mistaken, either. X was the last of Dr. Light's creations. Perhaps the Mega Man you speak of is another model entirely. Manufacturing a line of a certain model isn't uncommon, after all- I've seen plenty of mechaniloids with differing personalities but the same shape and same drive to perform their directive."
protomensch: (Kernel panic)

If his interest was piqued by the 'incorrect' names, the one he actually recognized hooked his attention full force. Especially that last fact of hers; last of the good Doctor's creations...?

"Then it wasn't the one I'm thinking of, that's for sure. Dr. Light has made quite a few since he made Mega Man."

[personal profile] bridgebunny 2014-06-26 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
"He did, certainly. But the details behind X's creation is shrouded in secrecy; all my database knows is that Dr. Cain found him in a timer-locked chamber. Instructions had been left stressing that the chamber not be opened until all the morality testing had been completed and passed... and judging by the aging in the alloy, X himself had to be around a century old when I first met him."

She sighed, laying a hand against the crystal embedded in her chest. "But knowing who the man was, and who X is now, Dr. Light wanted something to take into the next generation, no doubt. The time of the chamber's sealing was on the pinnacle of new minds and new ideas ready to be released into the world..."

The hand lowered, and she looked disturbed. "For good or for ill, I suppose. With how strong X is, I think he'd prepared for the latter just as much as the former."

But she canted her head. "The information on Dr. Thomas Light is extensive, but you sound as if you've seen him in the flesh, Blues. I confess I'm envious; I would have had so many questions for him..."

"...We've met, yeah."

He tried not to let his tone say too much, or somehow let slip his mixed feelings and lingering regrets on the matter. Perhaps the less he spoke of that particular connection the better-- especially since the only thing he knew about this robot was her curiosity on the matter.

Still, to hear her speak of X- and the lofty goals at play in his creation- it didn't seem like she was far off from the Dr. Light he knew and l... knew.

"That does sound like something he'd do, though. He wanted Robots to start thinking and living like humans... to take control of their own destinies."

"Even when I knew him, for better or worse, he'd already succeeded."

[personal profile] bridgebunny 2014-06-30 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
She nodded her agreement. The records were extensive on Dr. Light's accomplishments, even when he worked with Wily before everything happened.

But she noticed how time had flown, and with a short sigh she dusted off the front of her outfit.

"Well, I ought to start looking around and see what I can find. Surely there's a library here at the very least, or somewhere that may hold historical records on the city proper. Perhaps before their energy crisis."

She bowed slightly. "Thank you for your patience; it's a relief to know I didn't pick up a distress signal."
