A Festival Of Lights (Round 2!)

Who: Everyone
Where: All around Saeng Seong!
When: 13th July to 20th July
Summary: The residents of Saeng Seong are celebrating their annual summer festival, and the offworlders are invited to take part!
Warnings: Inbox death may occur. System overload at own risk. Long information post ahead, beyond the cut.

There's been a general sense of excitement among the natives of Saeng Seong for the past week or so, now; anyone who's stopped to question them about it (or has been close enough to hear them discussing it amongst themselves) will hear mentions of "the festival." Those who have been here long enough might have a good guess on what's going on, or about to happen. When the 13th rolls around, things become very clear.

Each year, the residents of the city come together to celebrate the summer. Setting the festival up is an all-day affair; taking part in the festival's events will make for an entertaining week; and tearing down the booths and decorations is another extensive process. But in the end, the residents usually agree that it's worth it, and this year they would like for their would-be saviors to take part.

July 13th
The flickers of activity start on the 13th, as all through the open districts, the natives move about with a sense of purpose. A committee has formed, focusing on decorating and assigning tasks to different groups of people. (And any curious individuals who might be willing to give their time!) They are centered in the Second District around the welcoming center in assigning tasks, but can be found everywhere.

The committee needs people to help with preparing and placing decorations all over the city; paper lanterns, twinkling strands of lights, and garlands of flowers, though they'll note that the flora is fake. They also need people to set up tables, chairs, and makeshift stages at the riverbanks that wind through the districts. Help is also needed redo the outdoor marketplace to make it more accommodating for booths hosting festival foods, games, and trinkets for purchase. Physically stronger characters may be asked to assist with setting up carnival rides in the free spaces - everything from a towering Ferris wheel (because clearly a second one is needed for such a festival!) to a carousel to bumper cars, and many others besides.

During this time, characters can also volunteer to man the booths on certain days, if they have anything they would like to contribute or would like to assist with anything.

Given how this happens on the same day as new arrivals come in, there may be some confusion for the newcomers! Fortunately, information is readily available in the form of written pamphlets, and the arrivals even get a complimentary jar of fireflies to hang onto.

Those jars are also available for other people to pick up. The jars are filled with fireflies (or the closest thing Saeng Seong has to them) and glow all through the festival. Though oddly enough, the jars seem to produce that much more light if the jar holder is in close proximity with someone else. Locals will also inform characters that it's good luck to hang onto the jars all through the festival.

And finally in the fifth district, the theater has set up a special film festival and is trying to distribute flyers and posters all through the city. Not only are they going to be showing films non-stop through the week (mostly following a summer theme) but admittance and kettle corn are free if someone brings a friend! Or have a great discount if they help distribute the promotional materials.

Characters who take part in the setup will be awarded with five vouchers, good for use during the festival. These vouchers can be used for the purchase of food, admittance to rides, or to allow them to play some of the games for free.

July 14th
The festival begins early morning on the 14th - that is, the booths are open and ready for business, selling all manner of street food - crepes, kabobs, funnel cake, shaved ice, almost anything you can imagine - along with a wide variety of other things for purchase, like one-of-a-kind clothing, hats, scarves, and the like, as well as jewelry and other trinkets. There are also booths where you can get your face painted, where you can have your fortune told, and all sorts of other activities.

There are also the games. Standard festival stuff: Knock down a milk bottle, win a prize. Throw a dart and pop the right balloon, get a prize. You can play a game to catch and take home a goldfish, if you like, or try your luck at any of the other games that are interspersed with the other booths.

These booths will be operating all throughout the festival, until the closing ceremony on the 30th.

The opening ceremony doesn't actually take place until sunset, despite the fact that the booths have been operating all day. It's a simple ceremony, though this year it has moved locations. It now happens at the shrine in the fourth district, with a speech about how summertime begets togetherness and how everyone should be thankful for the opportunities they've been given. All in all, it may be a little boring for characters with shorter attention spans. However, at the end of it, everyone lights a candle, makes a wish, and moves down to the river bank where they can set it adrift on the river once the sun has gone down entirely; the flickering candles will drift around the river all throughout the festival, and they never seem to burn down.

July 15th
The rides and games are going on full-force outside from the time the sun comes up, but in the afternoon characters will find that it's not as crowded as the day before. That's because there's dancing going on in the convention center - the afternoon is full of traditional group dances, the kind that are easy to learn the steps for and join in on; the natives will be especially delighted if their visitors teach them some of the dances from their home.

In the evening, it is not quite so energetic, though the dancing doesn't end. The songs slowly fade into slower, perhaps more romantic tunes, and the final dance will end precisely at midnight.

There will be refreshments available for free in the convention center during the dances, though not anything so filling as what characters will be able to purchase from the booths outside - mostly water, lemonade, cheese, and crackers. There is also a bar where specialty drinks and foods may be purchased.

July 16th
This day's special event happens after dark, though it's easy to see the preparations for it happening around the shrine, the welcoming plaza, and along the river front in fifth district. When the sun sets, one massive bonfire at the shrine is lit, along with two substantial bonfires at the plaza and river front. Many people gather, some with benches, to bask in the firelight. Some even write down the things they'd like to accomplish during the rest of the year onto slips of paper and cast them into the flames, in the hopes that the smoke will carry their wishes into the heavens.

Others gather around to toast s'mores and chat. Still others continue the dancing from the night before - off to the side to begin with, though as the night wears on they may expand into a bigger dance that will involve large groups of people circling around the fire in spirals.

Even away from the plaza, there are blazing lanterns throughout the city, and some smaller bonfires crop up in areas where it's not likely that anything important will catch fire.

July 17th
This day's festivities begin early on. The morning and early afternoon are devoted to a cooking contest - there are categories for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, and a winner for each - that both residents and visitors alike can take part in. Characters who cook delicacies from their own worlds may find the natives crowding them and asking for information about the dishes, and recipes to try on their own.

The late afternoon also has to do with food, and the characters are once again invited to take part in a variety of eating contests. There are your standard hot dog, watermelon, and pie-eating contests, as well as many others - the more daring may find themselves taking part in a contest where contestants are blindfolded and made to eat as much of rather... interesting concoctions as they can.

Characters who take part are given a voucher for use at any of the booths or rides in the festival; winners are given additional prizes. The winners of the cooking contest are determined ICly by character vote, so if there's a dish they especially love, make sure to mention that they'd vote for it so a tally can be kept! This time around, winners are largely up to player-character decision; there's no shortage of prizes to be given out, at the very least! (Though some might be on the silly side, such as a new cooking pan, or similar.)

July 18th
The extra activities on this day include showing off your physical prowess and your ability to cooperate with others.

On foot, there are three-legged races; pick a partner and try not to fall as you make your way to the finish line! There are also relay races - in teams of four - and you'll want to pick your teammates' positions well to ensure maximum speed. These races will take place multiple times during the day.

There are some other events to take part in as well: Thumb-wrestling tournaments, arm-wrestling tournaments, and outright wrestling tournaments.

This year's festivities bring a new event as well, in the form of cooperative boat racing. With a long stretch of river now open, characters can race from the start of the river in the fifth district down to the bottom of the third district. A specially decorated warehouse marks the finishing line, and the banks are packed with spectators cheering the racers on. It's encouraged that participants bring a friend to help them paddle, but individual racers might also be found. The boats in question vary from personal made boats to inner tubes to more...Creative options involving furniture. Hopefully none of them will sink, though!

At the end of the day, there will be a massive tug-of-war. Everyone who's mingling around and wants to take part will be sorted into one team or another, and then the two teams will face off.

Participants will receive festival vouchers; winners will receive additional prizes.

July 19th
The last day of the festival continues on like normal - the rides and booths are all operating, at least until the start of the closing ceremony that begins mid-afternoon and continues until the sun goes down. Winners of the various contests are once again recognized, the people who made the events a success are thanked, and the speech ends with a wish for pleasant experiences throughout the rest of the year.

The ceremony is timed such that there will be about twenty minutes for everyone to position themselves where they would like to be by the time fireworks begin being set off from a barge floating on the river between the second and third districts. There will be spaces on the riverbanks for people to watch from, though they can most certainly be seen from any other vantage point a character might like to try watching from, should they want to avoid the crowds.

At this point anyone who has been carrying a jar of fireflies is encouraged to release them. The little bugs appear none the worse for wear from being in a jar all week, and eagerly fly up into the night sky. Locals whisper another wish or hope as they do so, as the little dots of light mingle with the fireworks overhead.

July 20th
This day is a blur of activity as well, though not as fun as the past few days. The residents of the city are packing everything away and taking down the decorations, and they could use a little help if the characters are so inclined.

Characters who assist with the teardown will be rewarded with leftovers from the festival - plush prizes, food, maybe even some little trinkets characters have had their eyes on that haven't sold. No one's getting any fireworks, however.

Feel free to put up your own top-level comments, but be sure to put when and where the action is happening in the subject line!

Re: July 15th - Dances

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-17 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Just like the previous year, Freya is spending most of the day near the dancers, relearning some of the steps she'd joined in at that time and learning a few more. She's wearing a shirt that's more flowing at the hips and sleeves like the traditional costumes of her home and a silver bell tied carefully around her neck with a ribbon matching the yellow one around her tail.

When she trails around the edge of the crowd, she takes whoever looks willing to join by the hand and leads them into the frolicking with a smile. This is a week of celebration, and she intends to make the most of that, spreading the merriment if she can.]
now_i_know: (But you shielded me)

[personal profile] now_i_know 2014-07-17 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[After two days, Labrys was still dubious of the world and everything about it. Well, okay, that was only partially true. She discovered that most everything the pamphlet said was true, but that also meant that she was still proverbially kidnapped. That fact still did not set well with her.]

[Still, there was nothing she could do about it, which made her feel even worse. The fact that her appearance happened to coincide with a festival only made things worse. Who can be happy when they are forced against their will?]

[Still, Labrys decided that she was being childish about the whole thing, and was genuinely curious to see what people were gathered around for. She wasn't sure what she was expecting, but the fluid motion of the mouse(?) lady's(??) dance was mesmerizing. Though an entire novice at the appreciation of movement as art, the robot girl could tell that each movement was purposeful and expressed meaning. She was communicating herself with her own body. Before she knew it, Labrys was mesmerized.]

[Then, when her hand was held, she felt her face flush and she found herself caught within everything. Ahh... haha... oh, man, what did she do now?]

[Her panicked eyes stared at Freya's. Uh... l-like this? Maybe? She didn't know the moves, but maybe she could just... mirror her's? Maybe...]
dragoncrest: (serenity)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's easy for Freya to tell that the girl is flustered, and for a brief moment she wonders if mechanical-types are even that familiar with dance. She sees a few around, but hasn't seen any participate just yet.

Regardless, she gives Labrys a reassuring smile as they continue on the dance floor, keeping pace with the music. The girl certainly seems to be trying, and that's enough for her.]

You're doing just fine.
now_i_know: (Now that now I have unshakable faith)

[personal profile] now_i_know 2014-07-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[The robot girl was more like a child learning something new for the first time, which was more accurate than the simile conveyed. She had never seen dance before. All movement was purposeful and directed. Yet that didn't mean she lacked appreciation for this, either. In fact, she was having fun.]

[Oh sure, she wasn't being especially creative. She was mostly following Freya's lead. After a while, she thought she noticed some patterns and would follow in step. Though, more often than not this lead to a few awkward movements as the dance called for different steps at different times. The robot girl was taking it in stride, though, getting a little flustered but mostly laughing at herself whenever a mistep was made.]

[Her laughter shined clearest in her eyes. She was too focused to say anything, but on the few moments when she could spare a look directly at her partner, Labrys face was saying "this is new and exciting!" "this is fun!"]
dragoncrest: (humor)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-20 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Labrys's bright expression and the way she didn't allow the occasional misstep to affect her cheer helped raise Freya's already high spirits, and as they moved together she found herself letting out a few light-hearted chuckles as well.

When she can tell the song is coming to an end, she twirls the mechanical girl to add a bit of flair to the final steps.]

Enjoying yourself, I hope?
now_i_know: (And say the words I feel)

[personal profile] now_i_know 2014-07-20 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Labrys clapped along with the crowd. She didn't know or notice that they were clapping for them both and all the other dancers.]

Uh-huh! That was a blast!

[But then, of course, came one big admission.]

And I have no idea what I just did! [She said with an awkward, though still playful, laugh.]

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-21 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Good.

[Freya kept her focus on Labrys as she took a step towards the refreshments, deciding that this was as good a time as any to take a break. She was always glad to meet new people, after all.]

Well, I'd say your performance was impressive for someone who had no idea what they were doing. [Despite the humor in her tone, the words were sincere.]
now_i_know: (I had so much)

[personal profile] now_i_know 2014-07-21 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[The other girl, meanwhile, followed. She didn't reach for the water and didn't even seem out of breath.]

Well, I know what I was doing for that. I was just seein' what you was doing and followed that. [She didn't elaborate that she used that same technique to learn how her enemies fought, too.]

Was that... "dancing?"
dragoncrest: (serenity)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-23 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Learning to imitate something so quickly is a skill in itself.

[She intended to give credit where credit was due. With that said, she reached for some of the lemonade and a couple cubes of cheese to snack on.]

It was. You've not been to a performance before? [She was less surprised at someone not dancing before--Steve hadn't before they shared a dance last year, after all. But dancing was an important part of her culture, and was at least a small part of this one, so it made her curious.]
now_i_know: (Tell me what you're thinknig of)

[personal profile] now_i_know 2014-07-23 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Labrys shook her head. She was all smiles and appreciated the company.]

Nuh-uh. I haven't really been out and about like this. There's a lot of new things here I've never seen before.

[She looks out as the second group of dancers started taking their places. The music picked up and the next dance began.] It's fun.
dragoncrest: (neutral)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-25 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
There's no shortage of new things to be seen here, that's for certain. Especially during a festival such as this.

[But that takes her to the obvious question that she should probably go ahead and get out of the way.] I take it you arrived in the city recently?
now_i_know: (And I will hold you close)

[personal profile] now_i_know 2014-07-25 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's dat obvious, huh? [Of course, Labrys would admit that she wasn't actually trying to hide that fact.] Yeah. I arrived here, what, two days ago?

It's a lot to get adjusted to. But... hey, I have at least one good friend here. He helped out a lot, y'know?
dragoncrest: (serenity)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-26 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear it. I can imagine how much a familiar face might help.

[She sipped at her drink for a moment before speaking again.] But even with a friend, it is quite a change. I had an interesting time learning the technology of this place, and still some things take me by surprise.

[personal profile] heretic_hamlet 2014-07-19 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
[He had never been one for large crowds back at home; yet, somehow, since he had come, he'd found his way to the welcome center nearly every month on cue to greet the new arrivals and had yet to miss a single celebration or ceremony within the city. At first it was merely a matter of people-watching and fact-finding... but over the better part of a year, Ramza had to wonder if he was simply giving up on being the solitary sort.

It wasn't something he wished for in the first place, of course, and nor did he find himself much lamenting its absence. He counted himself fortunate enough to even have found friends again. And one friend, in particular, held his attention as he passed through the festival and drew him to a stop by the side of the dances.

He'd shared a dance with Freya before, perhaps a half-year ago- but, whether it was mood or modesty that restrained her before, here she had far livelier spirit and all the more graceful a motion. And by the time she had extended a hand his way, her mirth had spread straight across a shared glance, and his smile soon matched her as he took her hand and stepped onto the floor with her.]

You've a practiced step; have you done this before?

[Especially in light of the past few months, it was a relief to see that sort of happiness.]

You'll pardon me if I can't keep up.
dragoncrest: (humor)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-20 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
[To see Ramza partaking in the celebrations as well gladdened the knight, and she certainly hoped that the cheer of the city was helping him to be in a similar mood. At the very least, at the moment their hands met and they stepped into the dance, he did appear to be in a good humor.]

Some time ago, during the last festival, but the locals were eager to teach them again.

[Plus, she'd been in and around the convention center most of the day, alternately watching and joining in. So she'd had a little practice.]

I find it's more fun when I need to sweep a partner off their feet, in any case.

[That twinkle in her eye as she smiled didn't mean anything at all, really.]
heretic_hamlet: (Grin)

[personal profile] heretic_hamlet 2014-07-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[It was difficult to keep a pensive mood While surrounded by such festivities. Even moreso once he'd taken her hand and strode out alongside her and into the swirling crowd of dancers.]

With only a festival's time for practice? Mayhap you're just a natural.

[...even if, in spite of last time, he did feel a tiny bit outclassed. He'd never found training in the art as his lady knight allies did, and Freya had- seemingly- ample mastery of each. So much the better to have her as a partner, then; and her haughty remark only served to broaden that grin up his face.

He'd let Freya have that one with little more than a deferential bow followed by an outstretched hand. She was right, after all.]

As you would, Lady Freya.
dragoncrest: (serenity)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-07-24 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
[The dragon knight couldn't really have asked for a better dance partner in this place; Ramza was a close friend and good company, which was all she needed to enjoy a dance, regardless of what level of skill was involved. In any case, she knew he'd follow well enough.]

I'll do my best to impress you, Sir Ramza.

[Were she wearing her hat, Freya would have taken it off as she bowed in return, but instead she gave a curtsy. She took his offered hand as the next song began, something more mellow to balance out the energy of the last dance, but still full of cheer.]
heretic_hamlet: (Laughter)

[personal profile] heretic_hamlet 2014-07-29 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Fear not; you have already.

[While he'd shown his knowledge of one or two steps and motions the better part of a year ago, he was all but clueless in the face of this one. Saeng Seong's ways and culture were unlike anything in Ivalice, and their dancing was no exception...

He would try, at least, and even imitate a few of Freya's hand and arm motions reasonably well in the process; but it was a handful of musical measures until he could even match her in timing.

After a while, he stood in place, and simply laughed.]

Forgive me... I must look ridiculous.

[But he persevered, and continued his studious mimicry. If nothing else, the song and dance kept its desired effect; the mood remained lifted...]
dragoncrest: (humor)

phew, sorry for the wait

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-08-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
[She gave Ramza a smile in response to his encouragement, and did her best to keep the dance fun for the both of them. After all, the spirit of the dance was not in the timing or the precise details of the steps; it was the flow and the merriment that came with it.

When Ramza stopped, she raised her eyebrows with a curious but amused look.]

Not at all. But even if you did, that would only be part of the fun.
heretic_hamlet: (Hm?)

my turn to apologize

[personal profile] heretic_hamlet 2014-08-08 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
[A little humility never did any harm, even if it was already one of the precious few virtues he could say he'd retained. Besides which, even a cursory glance across the floor would tell him that few eyes were upon them this time, and he was far from out of place in being unpracticed.

After all, plenty of the festival-goers were guests themselves... and the city seemed more bolstered by their numbers with each passing month. It was a point he found himself wrapped up in pondering as the musicians slowed, and offered a short pause between their songs.]

It's been nearly a year for you, has it not?
dragoncrest: (serenity)

[AGRESSIVELY APOLOGIZES]

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-08-09 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Just a few days short, yes. It's hard to believe so much time has passed already.

[She moved towards the edge of the floor, wondering if Ramza wished to stop or not but willing to either continue or stop for a bit of water. If there was one thing about dancing that was constant across cultures, it was that it required a lot of stamina.]

And for you, it's been around nine months, hasn't it?
heretic_hamlet: (Sky)

[Apology intensifies]

[personal profile] heretic_hamlet 2014-08-13 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
[For now it was just a moment's repose until the music started again. Not that he'd lost his breath- he'd taken on far more arduous tasks over the years, and in heavy plate armor to boot- but then again, this was play, not work.]

...Time enough to have settled in, anyway. I'd not even given thought to how touch could power a city for the better part of a year.

[He laughed, a little bit nervously as he reached for a drink of his own. Somehow, in spite of it all, it was more peace and less suspicion than he'd found in Ivalice...]

It almost has the feel of a familiar home by now. ...Almost.
dragoncrest: (silence)

[muffled apology in the distance]

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2014-08-15 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been some time since I've stayed this long in one place.

[It was strange, how they'd gotten so used to it, enough to think of it as normal. She took a sip of water and hummed thoughtfully.]

I've not considered our eventual return for some time, as well. It seems a distant concern, sometimes, even though I still have every intention of going back.

[She watched the crowd with something of a serious look, thinking about how she'd have to leave behind all her friends, likely to never see them again. It was a necessity, unfortunately.]
heretic_hamlet: (Sky)

[A tasteful greeting card expressing remorse for one's deeds]

And I as well. I had... left my home long before I was taken here. Not that I wished to return... [Not in the state of affairs it was in for most of that time, anyhow. He wasn't exactly a welcome guest.

Ramza quickly realized he was staring down into his cup, idly fidgeting his fingers across the sides. He pulled himself out from his brooding.]

...and I do not know if that has changed. Were it not for dear friends and my sister, I know not what would have me return. Or if I've a life left to return to...

It seems so strange to consider, but mayhap I would truly be better off staying here.

[She looked at him with some amount of curiosity and slight surprise, though without judgment.]

Do you think so? I had not thought of it myself, but I still have much to do to help my home, though there is little of it left...

[Freya trailed off and remains silent for a few moments, bringing a finger to her lips in thought. She knew Ramza's situation was different. From the sounds of it, he'd long struggled in his world. This place must have come as a relief to him in some ways.]

I'm certain you could make a new life regardless of the location. I suppose which one you choose would depend on what it is you seek in life.

[Perhaps it was a bit of a serious question, but she wanted to know.] So what do you seek?
