Knights, Ninjas, and Beyond

Summary:Donatello and Diarmuid run into each other at the park.
Warnings: Medieval fighting styles?



The novelty of being able to just walk around in broad daylight to get some fresh air never quite wears off, no matter how many places Donatello goes to that allow him the privilege. That's probably why he's training in the park rather than in his apartment. That and because the apartment still smells like sulfur from when he knocked over a test tube last time he tried to do his staff kata in there.

So here he is, by the pond, whirling a stick around him in complex forms and shouting.

Diarmuid listens closely to what Donatello is saying, but before the teenager is even done talking, the boy is shaking his head. The shaking gets harder as Donatello continues.

"That's not right. There is always an honorable way to solve problems like that. It might be hard or take a long time, but as long as you don't give up, you will find a way. If you have to become a bad guy to do a good thing, it's not a good thing anymore!" He is very insistent about this, "Yes, there are always new problems to solve. That is why the world always will need heroes. What one hero can't solve, another can!"

Don sighs. Diarmuid's a sweet kid from the ancient past. How can he possibly explain world hunger, or the AIDS epidemic, or global warming? Should he even try?

He gives a sad smile. "I guess you're right. Though some problems probably take a whole lot of people deciding to be heroes in a small way, working together."

"Yes! That is right! It takes a lot of effort and a lot of help to fix some things," Diarmuid is idealistic, but he is also a realist in some ways. He knows these things take a lot of hard work and a long time to fix.

Or, at least, he knows as well as any child his age can.

He starts to say something else and then Grey, who has been silent for a while, whines and draws his attention, "Oh! I bet Grey is getting hungry. I probably should take him home." The boy turns back to Donatello and gives him a big smile, "Can we practice and talk again soon? I really had fun!"

Don nods and smiles. Diarmuid seems to understand the world's problems as well as he can be expected to given his age. And seeing them through the lens of optimism isn't a bad thing.

"Well, we wouldn't want to neglect this guy!" he says, reaching out to scratch the puppy behind the ears. "Sure, I'd like that!"

"Yay! I will talk to you again soon, then!" Diarmuid lets Donatello pet Grey for a few moments and then calls the puppy to his side as he makes sure everything is in his bag. He slings the bag across his back and then waves, "I am glad we met! Goodbye!"

Diarmuid turns and starts out of the park. Grey gives Donatello a friendly bark and then runs after his owner.

The turtle gives a friendly wave. "Bye, see you later!" he calls, hopping back to his feet and getting his bo back out to resume his training, the expression on his face perhaps less intense than it was before.
