Intro Log - September 2014

Who: Everyone
Where: The Welcome Center
When: 15th September, late afternoon
Summary: The new arrivals, freshly pulled from their worlds or others, awaken in a strange place...
Warnings: Inbox death may occur. System overload at own risk. NPC responses may be slow.

It's a shuddering breath, a sensation of being pulled to elsewhere and finding oneself pressed against something on the soft and some place cozy. However, before one can fully stir, there is and odd, warm stirring sensation that lifts you up from wherever you've been dropped, when you begin to drift off once more.

'I'm sorry for this... but we need your help.'

Yet the feeling -and the voice - pass quickly, and when you awaken, you begin to realize your surroundings. It's a small room with what some might recognize as a Far Eastern theme when it comes to decor, from the walls to the sofa (or bed) you find yourself on. Illumination is provided by carefully crafted lamps, and even a candle flickering on a nearby desk. The doors are made from paper and wood, with a thin frame; through them it's easy to hear other people stirring, talking, or coming to.

You are not alone...

On a small table beside you, there rests a note atop a manilla envelope. Unfolding the note will reveal some answers in the form of a letter addressed to all arrivals.

Welcome to Saeng Seong (it's pronounced sang see-oung if the name seems really strange)!

You are among a new group of arrivals to our city, from many far-apart worlds.
We have gathered you here because our city is in a crisis, and we are at our last resorts. The energy of the city is in a slow downward spiral, and is dangerously close to expiring altogether. Though with the help of other new arrivals like yourself, the situation is beginning to seem less dim. If you are wondering how this is, allow me to explain.

One hundred years ago, there was a terrible incident known as the Unleashing; an event that sent our world into what would have been a slow and painful end were it not for the quick response of a few. However in the process, our own energies have been left to maintain what is causing this energy crisis. We do not have enough to push back this plague on our own.

That's where you come in - you and everyone else we've brought to the city. Unlike those of us here, you have the potential to generate the energy the city needs, but you'll need to work together to do it.

Why? Because the energy can only be generated when two people touch each other. Any touch will do, but it must be between two of you who are new to the city. If you don't keep in contact with someone, eventually your energy will begin to drain as well, making you dangerously ill.

A few other things:

The closed-off sections of the city are closed off for a reason; approaching them will cause your energy to drain very rapidly. We're working to open the rest of the city to you as soon as we can, but for now, please remain within the first five districts of the city.

You have been given a key to a one-bedroom apartment in a complex set aside for you and the other new arrivals, near the riverside in the 1st district. You're free to change your living quarters whenever you like, and we encourage you to move in with someone in one of the larger apartments. When you want to change, just come back to this building to exchange your key.

We've also included a cash card with a living stipend; if you're unfamiliar with this system, or the network established for new arrivals, you can talk to Andi in the lobby for help. It's what she's here for. If you need medical assistance, contact Mai, one of our doctors.

Again, welcome, and thank you for all your help. Please come downstairs to the lobby for refreshments. If you have any questions, there will be others downstairs to assist you.

Irene
Arrival Liaison

Inside the manilla envelope , you will find: a ring with a key and apartment number on it, some kind of cash card, a map and informational guide to the city, and a second letter folded neatly on the top--

Honoured Guest,

First of all, I would like to second my colleague's welcome to our city with my own. Many have come to this world whether by choice or by our actions, and for my own involvement I humbly ask your forgiveness for potentially pulling you from your homes and loved ones. However, it is as Irene's letter states. We are in an energy crisis, and only you and your fellow new arrivals can aide us.

One hundred one years have passed since the event known as the Unleashing tore a rift in our world with Saeng Seong at its core. Ever since, we have had no word from the outside... until recently.

During the celebration of the autumnal festival last year, we were visited by spirits who perished in the Unleashing and demons. This was to be expected as in our world, the boundaries betwixt the living world and the spiritual wane towards the final day of the festival. However, the events to follow were not. As winter and the very rare snowfalls began, so too did snowmen come alive as bid by a dark magic. Some mages who align themselves with a faction named Rangar saw fit to seize the opportunity for mayhem, and the city suffered for it. However, in this and the following hackings into our citywide network, we have come to learn that there are still others who live outside the walls. Yet they too cannot sustain the energy levels needed to close this rift once and for all.

New friend, I cannot understate our need nor the truth in Irene's letter to you, but there are some in this city you should not trust. Who you do or do not trust is up to your own judgment (even mine is albeit clouded at times), yet I urge you caution. Every side has their own agenda, and even our different factions may be splintered into different parties like the individuals that make them. Though should you ever find need to seek solace or sanctuary, the temple doors are always open.

Rhea,
High Priestess to the Four
Arrival Liason

Odd... Neither were written in your own language, and yet you find it easily understandable. Soon enough, if you don't make an exit on your own, there's a gentle knocking on the door as someone comes from downstairs to usher you along.

"Welcome to Saeng Seong! I know you must be confused or upset as to what's going on, but we promise to explain ourselves further once you've had a chance to stretch your legs!"

Whether you go downstairs immediately or linger a little longer, eventually you must come on down to leave the small space, and sooner rather than later would probably be better. You'll find yourself in a well-lit lobby, filled with comfortable-looking couches and chairs. Along one wall are refreshment tables, loaded with all sorts of cool and relieving food and drink, including some you probably aren't familiar with. It's just as well they're in good supply, as the windows outside show a city well heated from a summer sun.

On the wall opposite are a pair of desks, each with a sign, and one person at her station-

Rhea, General Assistance
Andi, Technological Assistance

The plaques have a shiny semi-new look to them, as do the desks. Both lovely ladies seem eager to assist you, though one more.... self-contained than the one bouncing in their seat with anticipation.

Outside, and through the translucent glass you can see a banner hanging from the tiled roof of the building across the street. The cheerful colors on it match well against a bright blue sky:

WELCOME TO SAENG SEONG

"We met in the park a few days ago! He was really nice and helped me practice with my swords. I know a lot of new modern words now too because of him. Like moo-ta-gin!" Really, can this child smile any wider? It is obvious he enjoyed the time he spent with Donatello.

"My name is Diarmuid Ua Duibhne. I am a little knight and someday I will be a big knight! A hero! That is what people tell me anyway, so I have to practice really hard. I don't want to let anyone down!"

"Ya practice with swords huh?" With the kid grinning like that, it was hard to imagine him doing any kind of fighting, training or not. Did he just say mutagen? The anger that had been sizzling in his gut kinda dissipated during this odd conversation. It was hard to stay mad at the circumstances when someone as sweet seeming as Diarmuid was grinning at him so openly without a trace of fear. In fact, he didn't seem bothered at all that Raphael was a mutant turtle. Kids were...kinda amazing.

"One of our brother's trains with swords. His name's Leonardo." He added, wondering how much Donatello told him. He crossed his arms, tilting his head slightly. "So yer trainin' ta be a hero? A real knight like in what...medieval times?" Raph was no history buff, but he watched TV and movies.

Diarmuid did say mutagen or at least something close to it. He still has problems saying new words sometimes. However, even if he does have problems with words sometimes because he is from the distant past, one thing that being from that time has help him with is being used to seeing weird things. Seeing odd creatures is an every day occurrence back in his home of Ancient Ireland.

"I do practice with swords. I am learning how to use spears too!" Diarmuid claps his hands excitedly, "Maybe this place will bring your other brother here next. I bet he would have a lot he could teach me about using swords!"

He tilts his head, thinking about Raphael's question, "I think medieval times come after my time. I am going to be a knight, but everyone says I am from the distant past. There aren't any machines or chemicals or electricity! Nothing like that!"

"Maybe..." Raphael said with a slight shrug. The thought of his brothers appearing here, even Leo, was a comfort. Perhaps with all of them there, they'd be able to figure a better way out of this. "So Donnie showed ya some things did he? Growing up we learned different kinds of weapons. I ended up choosing the sai." His weapons were hooked into his belt thankfully. He would have felt more naked without them than if he had've showed up without his bandana.

"I did a little bit with the bo when I was younger. The closest to spear we had though was a naginata. It's basically a bo with a blade on the end." They still did weapons training with other weapons than their own. More to keep their skills sharp than anything. As Splinter would say, a ninja had to always be prepared.

"Hn...sounds like the dark ages to me!" He said, after Diarmuid described his time period. "I'm a city turtle. I'm not sure if I'd fit in back then..." He joked.

Diarmuid giggles, "Not the dark ages! We have light. It's just from fires and candles instead of electricity!"

Little one, that's not what he means...

"I told Donatello that knowing how to fight with a lot of different weapons is important. Your father is really smart to teach you guys so much!" He leans closer to Raphael and then gives him a curious look, "Is it true? That your father is a giant rat? If he ever is brought here, can I meet him? I bet there is so much I could learn from him too!"

Diarmuid loves learning almost as much as he loves helping others.

"Can you show me your sai? I haven't ever seen a weapon like that before! Swords, staffs, spears...I know weapons like that, but not sai!"

It wasn't often that Raphael interacted with kids like this. In fact, it rarely happened. He was still reeling at waking up and finding out that he wasn't in New York with the others so it was a little bit surreal. Here he was standing in a common room with people moving about - and none of them were giving him a second glance. At least, not one of fear or surprise - or the usual freak outs.

His curiousity about Splinter was kind of adorable. "Uh yeah! He's a rat, about this high." Raphael held a hand level at around his sensei's height. Splinter was shorter than the turtles, though the turtles weren't very tall by any means compared to humans. "He knows a lot yeah. He was the pet of a master ninja, so he learned a lot watching him and copying what he was doin'." Raph explained. "I'm sure if he ever showed up here he wouldn't mind meetin' ya."

At the question to see his sai, Raphael hesitated. His weapons were such a part of him that he rarely let others handle them. Well his brothers or Splinter was an exception of course. He just wasn't used to this sort of situation.

"Over here." He gestured over to one of the couches by the food tables, moving over to place his plate of food and envelop on a side table. Then he pulled out his weapons, flipping them in his grip with long familiarity into both defensive and offensive positions. "They ain't sharp like swords or daggers." He explained, showing that they were in fact blunt. The pointiest parts of them were the tips of the prongs and the central shaft. He sat on the couch so that he'd be more level with Diarmuid's height.

"They require ya to get all up close and personal. Just like how I like to fight." Raph grinned. "They can disarm, defend or attack...and they are balanced for throwin'."

"Wow...so that is why he is so smart! I bet he learned so much from that ninja master!" Diarmuid's eyes are impossibly big and excited as he listens to Raphael's answer, "I will be so honored if he would meet me. I could make food for all of you in thanks! Do you have a favorite food?"

Diarmuid follows Raphael over to the couch and then looks closely at the weapons when they are shown to him. Even though he is tempted to touch them, he doesn't since he hasn't been given permission to. He knows how important weapons are to those who use them and he respects that.

"Oh! I can see that they can be thrown. I remember being shown some knives that can be thrown once. Since they aren't sharp, they can be used to break bones, right?" Well, that is kind of a harsh question coming from a child, but Diarmuid continues and that helps explain why he is asking, "The spears I will get when I am bigger have weighted ends, so that they can be used to hit as well as stab. Weapons that can do more than one thing are really useful!"

Raphael was a bit taken aback at Diarmuid's enthusiasm and gratitude at the idea of meeting his sensei. It caught him by surprise because he wasn't used to this sort of thing.

He grinned a little at the question about food. "We like all kinds of food but our favorite is pizza." He admitted. "You ever had pizza? I doubt they had it in your time."

The open fascination with his weapons was also surprising to the mutant teen but he rolled with it. "Oh yeah. They're made of steel and can break bones easily and unleash a buttload of hurt in general." He put a sai down on the couch next to him and did a quick straight punch, more of a kizami-zuki or a quick jab. "My style of martial arts is a lot of hand to hand without weapons." He explained. "But ya add a weapon like the sai in there it becomes an extension of ya..." He picked it up, flipped it so that it rested along his forearm, and punched again. The striking surface was the pommel of the weapon at the tip of his finger. "It adds a lot more wallop, see?"

It must be the open curiosity and the big eyes. Raph offered one of the sai, hilt first so the kid could take a closer look. "It's heavy." He warned. "Ya don't wanna drop it on yer foot."

"Pizza? Yes! I had pizza here with my friend Suzaku once! It was really good, but kind of messy!" Diarmuid giggles remembering back to that day, then his expression saddens a little, "My friend isn't here anymore. I should learn how to make pizza in his memory. Then, I can make some for you and Donatello! You would like that, right?"

Diarmuid's expression becomes much more serious as he watches Raphael do his demonstrations, "It's important to be able to fight hand-to-hand and with weapons, because while weapons can make you stronger, you won't always have them or they could get broken! A good fighter is ready for all possibilities!"

As Diarmuid takes the sai from Raphael, it becomes very obvious that he has experience holding weapons. He takes it with both hands and holds it with a great deal of respect and care, "There is a lot of weight here. I think it weighs about as much as the weight on the end of my real spear does! It's too bad I don't have it here or I would show you!"

Well that was a relief! Raphael wasn't sure if a place like this would have pizza. He wasn't as much of a cook like his brother Michelangelo, but he had been bound and determined to try making his own pizza if the city didn't have any available.

"Hey, I'm down with any kind of pizza any time." He spread his hands with a small grin. "I'm just happy that it exists here." His expression shifted to mild concern though. "What happened to yer pal?" He wondered.

"Yer a smart kid." He noted. The guy may be young but he was obviously trained in some things. It didn't strike him as odd. Besides, Splinter started training him and his brothers when they were very young. "As ninja's, we were trained to fight with and without weapons, as well as to use the environment as a weapon. Pretty much anything can be picked up to lay down a ton of hurt on someone." Well almost anything.

He watched Diarmuid handle the sai, appreciating that the boy seemed to respect it.

"Yeah that would be cool. Say, they got gyms or dojo's here in the city? They might have things to work with."

"The place we ate the pizza at is in the 3rd District. I can show you sometime if you want! Making it would be more fun, though," the boy's gaze grows distant for a moment as he looks in the direction of the 3rd District and then he takes a deep breath and looks back at Raphael. "Sometimes, people get really sick here no matter if they get the right amount of touch or not. Those people get sent home so they don't die. That is what happened to my friend. He got sick and was sent home."

There are only a few people who arrived in the first group of arrivals like Diarmuid did left. He can't help but wonder if time has something to do with people getting sick, but that is something he can think about later. Maybe Steve or Lord James will have thoughts on it...

"Thank you! Father has taught me a lot, but I still have a lot to learn," Diarmuid carefully holds the sai back out to Raphael. "I don't know if there is a place to train here. We should find out! I was bad last winter and didn't train as much as I should have because it was cold. I need to do better this year!"
sai2yourface: ([2003] Yeah you got a problem?)

[personal profile] sai2yourface 2014-09-28 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, I'm down with that. I gotta map and stuff but I just arrived. I still haveta explore and see what's here." Raphael grinned at the idea of finding the pizza place. "Making it is fun, but I'm not as good at makin' it as my brother Mikey." He'd rather just eat it if he was honest with himself. He wasn't as much of a foodie.

"Sorry ta hear about yer pal." Raph frowned slightly. So people got sick if they didn't touch enough...and sometimes they got sick anyway? Man this place was weird. The surly ninja was a bit disconcerted and maybe a little awkward about it too. He wasn't really the huggy snuggly type. This place was somewhat going to push his boundaries.

Raphael took the sai back, twirling it in his hand and reverse gripped it against his forearm with long familiarity. The other one was soon in his other hand the same way. It was a quiet comfort to hold them.

"Don't like the cold huh? Yeah working out when it's freezin' kinda sucks." He agreed. "I'm sure this place gotta gym or somethin' somewhere. Most cities do."

"If you show me your map, I can probably point out where the shop is! That way you can find it when you go exploring! Donatello told me that Leonardo is really good at fighting and is your leader and stuff. What is Mikey like?" A curious look fills Diarmuid's eyes, "Besides being a good cook?"

"Thank you. I miss him, but he wouldn't want me to be sad, so I keep doing what I can and focus on the happy times we had!" Diarmuid watches as Raphael holds his weapons. The motion seems familiar as he knows he has drawn comfort from his weapons before. Hopefully, whatever thoughts are making the turtle uncomfortable pass soon.

"When I saw the snow last year, it was only the second time I ever saw snow. It gets cold where I am from, but we don't really get a lot of snow. The one time I saw snow away from here was when my father made it snow!"

[personal profile] sai2yourface 2014-10-01 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Raphael tucked his weapons back in his belt and leaned over to grab his envelope so that he could tug out the map. "We get snow in New York in the winter." He said, unfolding the map and spreading it out on the couch between them. "In a way it's easier to go out among people because of bundling up in winter stuff." He thought for a moment at the question about Mikey.

"Michelangelo is a bit of a goofball." He said with a small grin. "He's the youngest of us and can be quite the prankster." He didn't say that he was usually the target. Him and Mikey had a good competition going on sometimes. "He's into videogames and skateboarding and stuff. Pretty care-free kinda guy."

"Oh! Because they can't see how you look as well then! It's too bad you have to hide at all..." Diarmuid frowns at the thought and then shakes his head and focuses on finding the pizza shop on the map. "It's right in here," he points to a specific intersection of streets. "I can't remember which side of the intersection it is on, but it is definitely in that area! I remember it's not too far from the art shop!"

"He sounds a lot like my brother! He's not my real brother since I met him here, but he is still my brother because I say so. His name is Cu Chulainn and he will be an even bigger hero than me someday! He's just a kid now, but someday!"
sai2yourface: ([2003] Whateva)

[personal profile] sai2yourface 2014-10-17 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah he seemed like a bright kid. Raphael nodded at his observation. "Yeah it can suck." He agreed. "We just wanna live our lives like anyone else and stuff. But we can't just hang out topside the way we are. Bein' ninja's is kinda appropriate." He grinned a little. "Bein' one with the shadow's an' all."

He leaned forward to look where Diarmuid was pointing on the map. He makes note of the location of the intersection. "Cool. I'll have to check it out later once I scope out the apartment they gave me."

Raphael looked up at the mention of Cu Chulainn. "Hey, just because he ain't yer brother by blood doesn't mean he's not yer bro." He shrugged. "Me and my bro's aren't blood related. But we are family. Heck, our Dad's a rat - just sayin'." He knew just how weird that would sound to anyone who would overhear that.

"I'm sure with some trainin' you'll be a good warrior. Like anything ya gotta work at it a lot. Every day if ya can. It took me and my bro's about 15 years or so. But we live and breath that kinda stuff."

"It's too bad that you can't come to my world! People there are more used to different looking beings. Spirits and gods and other creatures are all over my homeland!" They might not be extremely common, but everyone knows they are there. Most likely, people would think he and his brothers were spirits. After all, that is what Diarmuid thought Donatello was at first.

"My father is a god! He's not my blood father, but he is the only father I have. Family can be anyone you want them to be!" Diarmuid nods excitedly, glad that Raphael understands what he is saying so well. Not everyone understand that, but it is something that Diarmuid feels like he has always known.

"Don't worry! I train every day and I have been training for over a year now. I will make sure to devote myself to it! It's very important for me to learn everything I can about fighting," he points at the spot on the map once more to make sure that Raphael remembers where it is and then smiles. "I hope you find it okay. I should let you get back to settling in. My brother and I live in apartment 2-05 in Building 3 if you ever need anything. I will be glad to help!"
