Who: Steve Rogers, Diarmuid, and open!
Where: The park.
When: October 17th
Summary: Steve and Diarmuid host a potluck in the park in hopes to get people together and to have fun. Anyone can join even if they don't bring any food along.
Warnings: none

With the announcement made and Diarmuid's posters out in the public, Steve could only wait and hope that people would come as they had promised. A couple of tables were set out and ready for people to put their trays on; Steve himself had already placed his dish on one. He also brought enough utensils and napkins for everyone, figuring that he could cover that at the very least as well.

Once more people started to arrive, it was a friendly atmosphere for anyone to start up a conversation, whether it be with a new friend or old. Good food and good company is enough to get anyone in a happy mood, right? ~~Maybe~~

At least the day was nice and the area peaceful, a good time for something like this.

The young man brightens up a bit when he sees Diarmuid is enjoying the dish he made. If he was aware of the boy's thoughts, he'd agree that they shouldn't be worrying about those kinds of things in this situation, especially since they can't do much about it now.

"Thanks," he says with a smile. "It does have those those, but butter and milk go into it, too, with a couple of spices. It's not very hard to make."

"Oh good! I like easy to make things. There is less chance of me setting the apartment on fire when I am learning to cook it!" Diarmuid laughs, though it hadn't been nearly so funny when he actually did set the apartment on fire trying to learn to make soup.

"Do you have any tips for someone just learning to make it?"

Diarmuid says it like it's no big deal, but the idea of fire and a little kid getting caught up in it is just the right combination to make Shinju feel uncomfortable. Not to mention he lives in the same building.

He tries to brush it off, regardless.

"I could write the recipe down for you, if you want," he replies. "There aren't a lot of steps to it, but it's always good to have things on paper in case you forget something."

"Would you? That will really help me!" It is so easy for him to forget things because he is just a boy and gets distracted. He tries really hard not to get distracted after that first fire, but sometimes it still happens. At least, he usually takes things off the heat now before getting too far away from the oven.

Diarmuid takes a few more bites of the macaroni and cheese. As he does, it's obvious he is thinking about something. Finally, he speaks up, "Can you put lots of other things in it once you get the basic recipe down?"

He likes variety. What can he say?

"Of course. I'll get it to you after I get back to my place and have something to write on." Since he already knew Diarmuid lived so close, it wouldn't be an issue giving it to him. Maybe he could come over and help, too, just to make sure Diarmuid didn't burn anything...

Shinju looks thoughtful for a second after the boy's question, but nods.

"I don't see why not. Putting ham and bacon in it is pretty common. Broccoli, too. I'm sure you could find some other good combinations."

"Thank you! That will be perfect!" Shinju is more than welcome to stay and help him cook. Diarmuid will learn faster that way and be less worried about screwing up too.

"I will have to try a lot of things then. I like trying new things and new combinations. It's not something I can do a lot at home. Once I find the perfect combination, I will have to have everyone over to try it. You and Yu and Steve and Lord James..."

But not Tony Stark. He's still on Diarmuid's bad list.

"I'll look forward to it," the young man says with a smile. Diarmuid's enthusiasm is charming in the way most kids' excitement is. "Don't hesitate to ask if you ever want some help, okay?"

He pauses for a moment afterwards before looking curious. "Who's James?"

"I will make sure to ask!" Diarmuid nods to emphasize the point and then tilts his head, "Lord James is Lord James..."

Not very helpful, little guy!

"Oh! Steve said that some people call him Bucky. Do you know Steve? They live together because they are good friends and have known each other a long time."

"Oh, Bucky."

His smile fades slightly, given that the weird sort-of way he knows about the guy is from one of Steve's less-than-pleasant memories. Good ol' memory swaps.

"Yeah, I've known Steve for a while--I met him when he was still smaller, not too long after he first got here. He's told me a little about Bucky, but I didn't know he was going by James now."

"That is the name he gave me when we met after he first arrived. I didn't know he was called Bucky until just today," Diarmuid shrugs and pauses to take another spoonful of the macaroni and cheese before he continues. "People can have more than one name, though. He probably just likes them both!"

Diarmuid can't help but wonder why Shinju's expression falls, but he doesn't ask. Knowing James can be hard sometimes because of his memory loss and flashbacks. He just assumes that is the reason.

At least he's kind of close?

"Maybe," he replies, but he has to wonder. Steve calls him that, but if he introduces himself as something else, maybe he doesn't like the nickname anymore.

Well, he guesses that's something Steve has to worry about. He's going to try not to get into all of that.

After talking for a while and seeing someone else eat, Shinju is starting to get hungry, so he finally stands up.

"I'll be right back--just going to get a plate."

"Okay! Make sure you get lots!" Diarmuid waves at him and then, once he has left to get his place, focuses on eating the rest of the macaroni and cheese that he has before it gets too cold. It really is good. He's going to have to make sure he tells his brother about it when he shows up. Lately, Diarmuid has been doing a lot of his cooking experiments alone and it would be nice to have his brother helping him again...

When Shinju returns, he has two bowls in hand--one of Kit's stew, and one of Steve's chicken noodle soup. He sits down next to Diarmuid again and sets the stew down for now, intending to eat them one at a time.

"Still liking it?"

Diarmuid holds up his now empty bowl and grins, "Yes! All gone! What did you decide to try?" The boy sets his bowl to the side and then leans over to see what Shinju has, "Lets see... Steve's soup and...Kit's stew! The stew is really good! It's a recipe from her home and she was even able to find vegetables that were a lot like the ones used in the recipe. She used parsnips for..." he pauses to try and remember the word, but eventually shakes his head. "I can't remember what they were called. They are bigger than parsnips on her world, but they taste almost the same!"

"Oh yeah?" he says, putting his spoon in the soup. "It sure smells good. It can be hard to figure out what kind of things here are like what we have at home. First you've got to be willing to taste them, and then you've got to figure out if they cook differently..."

He wasn't about to lie about not wanting to touch some of the weird-colored plants they had here. But Steve's soup doesn't have anything mysterious in it as far as he can tell, so he takes a spoonful in his mouth.

"Yes! Fortunately, curious kids are good at wanting to try new things!" Diarmuid giggles and then sits back so Shinju can eat without him hanging over his food.

"Steve's soup is good too even though it is simple. Things don't have to be complex to be good!" Most of Diarmuid's favorite things from back home are simple dishes after all!

Shinju laughs at Diarmuid's perceptive comment himself. "That is fortunate."

He takes a moment to enjoy a few bites of the stew, glad it isn't too hot. That way he doesn't have to wait to enjoy it.

"That's the fun thing about cooking," he replies. "It's always satisfying when something more complicated works out, but if you don't want to put in the effort, you can always make something that tastes just as good."

"Or if you are just learning, like me! I don't mind trying hard, but I am too little to keep track of lots of things at once," Diarmuid jumps up and gives a big smile. "Enjoy your food, okay? I am going to go and make sure everything is going okay with everyone else. I look forward to learning how to make the macaroni and cheese!"

He watches Diarmuid curiously when he springs up, but gives him a small smile when he says he's leaving for the moment.

"Okay, I'll see you later, then. Take care, okay?"

"I will! Have fun at the rest of the potluck!" Diarmuid waves at Shinju and then runs off toward the tables.
