A Festival of Lights

Who: Everyone
Where: The stable areas of Saeng Seong - mostly in the third district
When: 24th July to 31st July
Summary: The residents of Saeng Seong are celebrating their annual summer festival, and the offworlders are invited to take part!
Warnings: Inbox death may occur. System overload at own risk. SOME NPC RESPONSES WILL BE SLOW UNTIL THE ONE WHO PLAYS THEM IS PRESENT.

It's time to celebrate, to celebrate, to celebrate...

There's been a general sense of excitement among the natives of Saeng Seong for the past week or so, now; anyone who's stopped to question them about it (or has been close enough to hear them discussing it amongst themselves) will hear mentions of "the festival." On the 24th, what they're talking about becomes clear.

Each year, the residents of the city come together to celebrate the summer. Setting the festival up is an all-day affair; taking part in the festival's events will make for an entertaining week; and tearing down the booths and decorations is another extensive process. But in the end, the residents usually agree that it's worth it, and this year they would like for their would-be saviors to take part.

July 24th
On the 24th, the characters will notice that most of the city natives are moving about with a general purpose; they will find that in the Second District, in the very plaza where they all arrived, a committee of sorts is organizing volunteers and assigning them to different tasks in different parts of the open districts.

The committee needs people to help with preparing and placing decorations all over the city; paper lanterns, twinkling strands of lights, and garlands of flowers, though they'll note that the flora is fake. They also need people to set up tables, chairs, and makeshift stages at the riverbanks in the first and second districts, as well as to help redo the outdoor marketplace to make it more accommodating for booths hosting festival foods, games, and trinkets for purchase. Physically stronger characters may be asked to assist with setting up carnival rides in the free spaces - everything from a towering Ferris wheel to a carousel to bumper cars, and many others besides.

During this time, characters can also volunteer to man the booths on certain days, if they have anything they would like to contribute or would like to assist with anything.

Characters who take part in the setup will be awarded with five vouchers, good for use during the festival. These vouchers can be used for the purchase of food, admittance to rides, or to allow them to play some of the games for free.

July 25th
The festival begins early morning on the 25th - that is, the booths are open and ready for business, selling all manner of street food - crepes, kabobs, funnel cake, shaved ice, almost anything you can imagine - along with a wide variety of other things for purchase, like one-of-a-kind clothing, hats, scarves, and the like, as well as jewelry and other trinkets. There are also booths where you can get your face painted, where you can have your fortune told, and all sorts of other activities.

There are also the games. Standard festival stuff: Knock down a milk bottle, win a prize. Throw a dart and pop the right balloon, get a prize. You can play a game to catch and take home a goldfish, if you like, or try your luck at any of the other games that are interspersed with the other booths.

These booths will be operating all throughout the festival, until the closing ceremony on the 30th.

The opening ceremony doesn't actually take place until sunset, despite the fact that the booths have been operating all day. It's a simple ceremony, set at the riverside, with a speech about how summertime begets togetherness and how everyone should be thankful for the opportunities they've been given. All in all, it may be a little boring for characters with shorter attention spans. However, at the end of it, everyone lights a candle, makes a wish, and sets it adrift on the river once the sun has gone down entirely; the flickering candles will drift around the river all throughout the festival, and they never seem to burn down.

July 26th
The rides and games are going on full-force outside from the time the sun comes up, but in the afternoon characters will find that it's not as crowded as the day before. That's because there's dancing going on in the convention center - the afternoon is full of traditional group dances, the kind that are easy to learn the steps for and join in on; the natives will be especially delighted if their visitors teach them some of the dances from their home.

In the evening, it is not quite so energetic, though the dancing doesn't end. The songs slowly fade into slower, perhaps more romantic tunes, and the final dance will end precisely at midnight.

There will be refreshments available for free in the convention center during the dances, though not anything so filling as what characters will be able to purchase from the booths outside - mostly water, lemonade, cheese, and crackers. There is also a bar where specialty drinks and foods may be purchased.

July 27th
This day's special event happens after dark, though it's easy to see the preparations for it happening in the plaza where all the characters arrived - when the sun sets, a massive bonfire is lit, and many people gather, some with benches, to bask in the firelight. Some even write down the things they'd like to accomplish during the rest of the year onto slips of paper and cast them into the flames, in the hopes that the smoke will carry their wishes into the heavens.

Others gather around to toast s'mores and chat. Still others continue the dancing from the night before - off to the side to begin with, though as the night wears on they may expand into a bigger dance that will involve large groups of people circling around the fire in spirals.

Even away from the plaza, there are blazing lanterns throughout the city, and some smaller bonfires crop up in areas where it's not likely that anything important will catch fire.

July 28th
This day's festivities begin early on. The morning and early afternoon are devoted to a cooking contest - there are categories for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, and a winner for each - that both residents and visitors alike can take part in. Characters who cook delicacies from their own worlds may find the natives crowding them and asking for information about the dishes, and recipes to try on their own.

The late afternoon also has to do with food, and the characters are once again invited to take part in a variety of eating contests. There are your standard hot dog, watermelon, and pie-eating contests, as well as many others - the more daring may find themselves taking part in a contest where contestants are blindfolded and made to eat as much of rather... interesting concoctions as they can.

Characters who take part are given a voucher for use at any of the booths or rides in the festival; winners are given additional prizes. The winners of the cooking contest are determined ICly by character vote, so if there's a dish they especially love, make sure to mention that they'd vote for it so a tally can be kept! Winners of the eating contests are determined by RNG after all participants have been confirmed, with characters that have a canonical advantage (IE Maya Fey and her "separate stomachs") having more than one number that would lead to their win. Be sure to note such advantages while having your character take part.

July 29th
The extra activities on this day include showing off your physical prowess and your ability to cooperate with others.

On foot, there are three-legged races; pick a partner and try not to fall as you make your way to the finish line! There are also relay races - in teams of four - and you'll want to pick your teammates' positions well to ensure maximum speed. These races will take place multiple times during the day.

There are some other events to take part in as well: Thumb-wrestling tournaments, arm-wrestling tournaments, and outright wrestling tournaments.

At the end of the day, there will be a massive tug-of-war. Everyone who's mingling around and wants to take part will be sorted into one team or another, and then the two teams will face off.

Participants will receive festival vouchers; winners will receive additional prizes.

July 30th
The last day of the festival continues on like normal - the rides and booths are all operating, at least until the start of the closing ceremony that begins midafternoon and continues until the sun goes down. Winners of the various contests are once again recognized, the people who made the events a success are thanked, and the speech ends with a wish for pleasant experiences throughout the rest of the year.

The ceremony is timed such that there will be about twenty minutes for everyone to position themselves where they would like to be by the time fireworks begin being set off from a barge floating on the river between the second and third districts. There will be spaces on the riverbanks for people to watch from, though they can most certainly be seen from any other vantage point a character might like to try watching from, should they want to avoid the crowds.

July 31st
This day is a blur of activity as well, though not as fun as the past few days. The residents of the city are packing everything away and taking down the decorations, and they could use a little help if the characters are so inclined.

Characters who assist with the teardown will be rewarded with leftovers from the festival - plush prizes, food, maybe even some little trinkets characters have had their eyes on that haven't sold. No one's getting any fireworks, however.

Feel free to put up your own top-level comments, but be sure to put when and where the action is happening in the subject line!

Do you need any help?

[There will be a smiling gentleman wearing a fancy suit standing behind her. He will place a hand over his chest in a servitude manner as he continue to speak.]

I apologize for interrupting your current train of thought. Is there anything I can do to be service to you? You seem to be having a difficult time.

[Holiday had a bit of a jump at the sudden voice beside her, but gave a small uneasy smile anyway.]

I was just trying to figure out what to wish for. I didn't want it to be something generic, but something I... you know, really want.

Guess I'm having a hard time deciding.

Indeed. You seem quite focus over the matter earlier. I could not help take notice of it.

[He will begin to wonder over the best way he can help her decide on a wish that mattered to her.]

Wish asking can be quite difficult to decide on especially when there are an infinite number of possibilities to choose from. At the moment, is there anything you truly wish for? Anything you wish to happen -- be it in the near or distant future? A goal, idea, or dream you are trying to turn into a reality? Is there anything you would like to happen to you or those you hold close? I believe as long as the wish comes from the heart, then it can never be known as generic. [Can you tell he is the type to dream or has many wishes?]

[Holiday blinks at him...]

I... guess. Well, there are a few things, but... I guess I'm not sure how exactly to word it other than "I hope everyone I care about back home survives the next few months and doesn't turn into a loyal zombie for the bad guys."

[... Yeah...]

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-08-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Well now, her words caught his attention over the matter.]

It seems as though you already hold a specific wish to request for. I, too, have a similar situation occurring in my own world. Except we are having trouble with demons than zombies.

[He will look down at the item in his hands that will supposedly be offered for wish requesting. Maybe he could further help her figure out a wish she really wants to use for?]

I'll use this small item to ask for the safety for both my own acquaintances and yours as well. What are the names of those from your home world, miss? Of course, if you don't mind my question. [Another smile will appear as he continues to wonder about it.]
doc_holi: (means a lot)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-08-09 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it's not... exactly zombies, but more than close enough lately.

[Oh? She gives him a thankful smile.]

You don't have to do that. You should make a wish for yourself or the people that you love.

i am so very sorry for this overly late tag. orz

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-08-21 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Close enough? What do you mean by it? [But then realizing he might be overstepping his boundaries, he will quickly add.] Ah, I apologize if I asked a too personal question, you do not need to answer it.

[As for her own words, Soushi's smile will grow weaker as he could not help shake his head slightly.]

Not too long ago, before arriving here, I was celebrating New Years Eve with those I dwell with. My wish has been made for the upcoming year. I do not hold anyone dear here or hold any type of wish that needs to be granted. That's why... [His smile will become genuine as he admits:] Please do not worry as I have no other wish to request. I do not mind to be of use this way especially if I can be help to such a thoughtful and wonderful individual such as yourself. I am certain you could do more with a single wish than I can.
doc_holi: (shock)

No worries! I'm always happy to do back tags

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-08-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, it's just... some of the people are abusing the technology given to them...

[She doesn't say more as she listens to his small speech... and becomes a bright red doctor by the end of it. Her fingers busy themselves with the paper in her hands.]

O-Oh, I- I'm not all that, really. I'm just trying to think of a useful wish, that's all. If anyone's thoughtful here, I think you would be that person.

thanks for the help. normally i am faster, but the summer holidays slow my speed down like crazy.

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-08-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I see. [He will look ahead as he adds under his breath:] ...it's that type of world...

[As for her own words, Soushi will simply offer her a polite smile.]

Thank you very much for your kind words. I do not believe myself to be known as such. I am simply trying to offer you a helping hand. [His gaze will turn to the small item in his hands as he continues to observe it in silence.]

Have you ever participated in a event quite like this? It's rather fascinating. It has some resemblance to the festivals that my previous employer would describe to me when he used to attend school. Do you believe we will have the pleasure to dance around a bonfire next?
doc_holi: (warm smile)

No problem :) I understand.

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-08-28 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, no. Not something like this, anyway. [Heard of them. Never really attended.]

I'm sure they'll have something like that before the night is done, if they haven't already. I would accompany you in a dance, if you'd like.

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-09-05 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What type of events have you attended to before arriving here?

I agree. It would be wonderful if there were to do so. I have never witness nor participated in one before, but I have heard of them.

[Then at her invitation for a dance, Soushi will smile at the offer. It would definitely help in keeping them from getting sick.]

If it is your wish to do so, then I would be most honored to accept your invitation. [A slight bow of his head.] Thank you very much. I am most grateful for your thoughtfulness. You're very kind.
doc_holi: (you shouldn't have)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-09-06 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, just small parties, if anything. I've even been to a few sports games when I was younger. [Ah, high school.]

O-Oh. [A little flustered, Holiday bows in return with a happy smile.] Please, it's hardly anything. If nothing else, to pay you back for your own thoughtfulness concerning my own problems.

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-09-08 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you've enjoyed quite a pleasant life in your home. [A smile will form as he tries to imagine or even understand it all. High school? He knows what it is, but has never attended one.] It's wonderful to hear. I do hope you will get the chance to enjoy those moments once more. [Since it did sounded like she was busy fighting against an evil villain. Those are usually time consuming.]

Nevertheless, it was a gracious gesture on your part as well. A gesture that is not entirely necessary as I only wish to be of use. [But even so, he will genuinely smile at her because he was happy for her offer.] ...thank you for doing so, however. I will gladly accept your offer. Hopefully, it will be of mutual help to keep ourselves from getting ill.
doc_holi: (smile)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-09-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have had a good life, for the most part. [Thinking about things like this in a whole new light was nice, but... it was the past she was thinking on, before the Event. Of course things were nice back then.] I just hope I won't be going through my experiences here on my own.

Being of use to others is something I also strive to do and I'm glad that you accept. I would just worry otherwise.

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-09-11 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I am most certain you won't. [And with a smile.] There are many of us present at the moment, we can all create as many new and wonderful memories until we are able to return home. Until then, I will enjoy my stay in this city.

[Then at the mention of her working for the same goal, it definitely had his attention.]

I'll keep it in mind for future reference. Rest assured, I do not believe I will have the heart to reject you especially when you are earnestly striving for such a goal. If I may ask, what type of duties do you currently work in? Do you work under security, by any chance?
doc_holi: (smile)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-09-13 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my plan exactly. [Until it's inevitably interrupted.]

[Holiday shakes her head.] Science. Technology and medicine particularly.

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-09-16 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Do you mean work as a scientist? Or a pharmaceutical specialist?
doc_holi: (smile)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-09-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
The first. I deal with... special cases. Particularly mutations of biological lifeforms.

Though, I spend a lot of time working in pharmaceuticals. I'm searching for a cure to a plague back home currently.

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-09-23 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Mutations of biological lifeforms? [He will look quite impressed and curious over the matter of his duties.] Do you mean like...humans that develop special abilities of some kind? Or some type of mutation that is caused by an illness of some kind?

[But then at the rest of her work, Soushi will smile a bit as he finds it quite impressive.]

I'm certain you will find it as you seem to hold a great level of knowledge and preparation. If I may, what type of plague is currently affecting your world?
doc_holi: (smile)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-09-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost a mixture of both really. They can alter physical appearance or abilities as well as mentality. Sometimes it's a blessing, other times, a curse.

[Her smile widens and she nods.] The mutations I just mentioned. They're caused by nanoscopic machines in the air of our planet... Don't worry about me, though. It takes a lot of someone to catch the Nanites from anyone of my home. [She's already checked.]

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-09-26 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It does sound rather complex. A technology to have the power to alter so many aspects of a human body is very interesting. It's a shame it is used for the wrong reasons. At the very least, it sounds as though it is.

[Another nod will be offered along with a chuckle.]

There is no need to feel any concern over my well-being. It is difficult for someone in my position to catch any type of illness as I am protected to the highest form possible. [Although, he is curious.] But I trust your knowledge and guarantee over the matter. What are usually the common symptoms to know if one is affected or not?
doc_holi: (worried)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-09-27 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't think it was meant to at first. The entire thing was a big accident, but we're working into reprogramming the technology, to not only fix it, but restore it back to its original purpose, hopefully, which was a cure to all ailments.

That's good. [She smiles... and then frowns.] There aren't any to find out if you're infected, but the activation process of the nanites have symptoms like fever, bleeding nose, shakes, that sort of thing.

Right now, I'm the only person here from my home. To get infected means that you have to have direct contact with my blood or other fluids. Honestly, it would be extremely difficult for one to get infected. Considering my status back home, I'm the best person to be here for something like that.

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-10-03 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[The explanation over the primary objective of the technology, Soushi will be impressed at the futuristic setting the other doctor was from. It was very clear she was knowledge and knew what she was doing.]

The technology you spoke of is most impressive. I do hope you find a way to solve the problem with the...nanites, was it? Does it have an official name it is known by?
doc_holi: (smile)

[personal profile] doc_holi 2013-10-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Just nanites. We don't know much more about them than that.

Thank you very much.

[She was very happy the guy didn't seem too alarmed with her, uh... condition. It was one of the reasons she didn't feel comfortable letting the world know.]

[personal profile] alwaysloyal 2013-10-07 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. It must be difficult to have limited data over it.

[He can sympathize with her in this particular area for several reasons. But then, it will not take long until he realizes an important fact -- he hasn't asked for her name and they are somewhat holding the line up as well.]

It has been a pleasure to speak with you over this matter and about wishes. I do hope you take this time to rest and be at ease over the matters of your world. My name is Soushi Miketsukami. May I be as bold as to learn your name, Miss?
