Lights Out

Who: Everyone!
Where: City wide event!
When: November 27th
Summary: The end of the first round of storms occurs, and with a bang.
Warnings: Power outages, a certain amount of stumbling around in the dark

After several days of constant rain, it feels like something should give. And in a way, something does; on the 27th, the storm clouds appear a little more dark, and a lot closer to the ground, with a certain amount heaviness that no amount of torrential rain pouring out of them is easing.

There's still some tension in the air; an almost electric charge that gets hairs to stand on end.

The only warning is a dazzling whip of lightning that snakes out of the sky and strikes into the city. The thunder roars a second later...Followed by every light in the city going fizzle-snap and shorting out.

It may be a long day, and without much in the way of power.

She chuckled quietly. That was certainly true. Unlike their neighbors, they had plenty of precipitation. She had to wonder, though, why the Cleyrans had decided upon the desert after living in Burmecia... or was the rain even present a thousand years ago? It felt as if she would never learn now...

Shaking her head at herself, she focused on Steve's remark about the blackout. "It seems as if it's been a few hours already," she said. "I suppose we'll just have to see when it comes back." Either that, or wait for the people in charge to come tell them how long it was expected to last. She didn't know if that was common practice or not, but judging by Steve's comments, it didn't seem as if it was.

"Just gotta wait it out, I think." He didn't really know much about fixing this, but he'd gladly help out if he could. Maybe if this wasn't fixed by tomorrow he'll go out and check things.

But in the mean time... "If you don't me asking, what are those cards, Miss Freya? I haven't seen 'em before."

"They're cards from a game in my world," she explained. "I'm not sure how they got here, but there are a lot more of them than I would have expected..."

Even if she did think she'd get something from home, she didn't imagine it would be a pack of trading cards. Maybe something like a weapon or a trinket from home--something she actually owned before--but... she would take what she could get, she supposed.

"Did the scientists bring them here for you?"

Steve continued to look at the cards for a moment, wondering how this game was played. He didn't quite understand how this worked at all. "Do all these monsters exist in your world?" It seemed like a dumb question, but they could exist in other worlds. It all looked possible now.

"I suppose that would make the most sense, but I can't imagine why." For them to use energy to bring something so trivial, that couldn't generate energy? It seemed like a complete waste of time and effort.

"They do. Although a few of them are not monsters," she said, taking a card with a crested yellow bird and offering it to Steve. "This one is a bird we sometimes use for transportation, called a chocobo."
wontdoanyless: (is this a test)

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-15 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Steve didn't get it either, but it was a nice thought at least? Like maybe they wanted to do something nice for some of the people here.

"Transportation?" He looked at the yellow bird on the card. Steve has heard of people riding ostriches, but it was really rare. Although people just used cars more in general anyway. "Is it difficult to ride a chocobo?"

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2013-12-15 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
"As long as it's friendly, it's not terribly difficult," Freya replied. "And they like you enough if you simply feed them. Most people depend on airships or simply travel on foot, though. Chocobos can be difficult to find, if you don't know where to look."

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-16 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Kinda like taming a horse then." Not that Steve was an expert on horses, but he figured that it took some time to get them ready for transportation. However, most of his thoughts about that vanished when Freya mentioned the airships.

"Traveling by air is really common in your world?" Steve sounded a little amazed by the thought. Of course there's airplanes in his time, but only the really rich could afford something like that. Or if you were in the war, but that wasn't really fun to begin with. "Have you done so as well?"
dragoncrest: (neutral)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2013-12-16 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Freya nodded. "They are only slightly less common than horses," she said. "Air and sea are the safest methods, so most travel is done in ships if the destination is far enough to justify it. Common people are more likely to go by boat, though; airship travel is typically for cargo or the wealthy. But I have taken a ride on a cargo ship or two, myself. It isn't unheard of."

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-17 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Air travel is only done by the wealthy in my world too. Or if people are piloting them for the war." But he didn't go too much into that, not unless Freya asked for further details.

"How was it? Traveling through the air? Sounds like it's something someone wouldn't forget." Steve looked curious, it was always something that he wanted to know. It definitely sounded like an experience.

"Airships for battle are more common than passenger ships on Gaia, as well," she remarked. She'd seen a few fleets, especially before she arrived here.

"It was..." Freya took a moment to search for the right words. "... certainly remarkable. I'm familiar with the feeling of having nothing under my feet, but it was different than that, being carried in the air. The view was one to behold, even with the Mist."
wontdoanyless: (smile)

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-18 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Being that high up in the air... kinda gives a different view of the world too. Wonder if one day we'll go so high that we can see the whole planet from the ship." He wondered what that would be like. Maybe it was possible sometime down the line.

"The Mist? Is it really misty on your planet?"
dragoncrest: (neutral)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2013-12-18 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not certain. Though I have met others whose worlds had such a capability. I can't imagine what it must be like." Though her world would have to figure out a way to travel to other continents via the air first. As for right now, they still depended on the engines developed through use of the Mist.

"On the continent I live on, yes. The Mist covers much of the land, including my home, but many kingdoms have built above it, on the mountains. Because it spawns monsters, it makes travel very dangerous."

"I hope that we reach there sometime." Steve looked a little excited at the thought. Seeing such a big world, the place he grew up in a whole new perspective, sounded amazing to say the least. "Hopefully there won't be any alien invasions before that." He had seen that before in a movie and although it was definitely fiction, there was now a confirmation of other people on planets. Still, mostly everyone that he met here was nice.

He looked surprised at the information she was giving him. "Monsters spawn from it? Sure doesn't sound like any normal mist..." Sounded like something from one of those horror stories. Like Dracula appearing from a misty area, except he wasn't created from it.
dragoncrest: (surprise)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2013-12-19 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Alien invasions?" She had to admit the idea was strange. She hadn't even thought about the existence of other worlds with living things like her before she came to this place. Coming here had to be the work of magic, but she never imagined such magic could exist. Perhaps there were those from other worlds living on hers, unbeknownst to anyone...

"Oh, yes. The Mist is a magic substance," she explained. "We aren't certain from where it originates, but we use it to power our airships. At least it has done us some good."
wontdoanyless: (smile)

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-19 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, people coming from other planets to destroy Earth, or take over it." He seemed a little sheepish, but he was happy to explain. "Science fiction has become really popular in my country, talk about traveling to planets, meeting aliens, and interacting with advanced robots in various stories. And I'm lucky enough to say I've done all three here." Well, JARVIS definitely counted at least, even if he didn't have an actual form. The thought was less scary to Steve than he thought it would be.

"The Mist is really something... guess there's no way to get rid of it either?" Even if did power airships, it still created monsters that put people in danger.
dragoncrest: (vexation)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2013-12-20 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"I would hope that most worlds would keep their warfare and conquering to themselves..." The war at home had take enough lives and destroyed too much of the land on its own, and it hadn't even spread out of the continent.

"Not that we're aware of. I'm sure there have been those that tried, but it's so pervasive, I wouldn't know where anyone could start." The Mist was just a fact of life to her, and she'd heard that a substance similar to it was the cause of the mess here... and they weren't trying to get rid of it either. Like the kingdoms of her world, Saeng Seong appeared as if it was trying to simply keep its citizens safe.

"I'd hope so too. But there are always bullies in every place, wanting to hurt and take control of everything." He wanted to stop all of them, but joining World War II was going to one of his first big steps. Steve just hoped that he could do something there. "We just gotta be prepared for them."

"Guess for now, all you can do is adapt to it. For now, at least. Try and protect others and keep the danger down." He wished he could do more about it though.
dragoncrest: (serenity)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2013-12-21 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Greed does seem to be a constant across worlds," she remarked. But when she returned to her world, she would simply try to focus on helping the remains of her kingdom. There wasn't much to be done about other worlds.

But Freya let out a quiet chuckle at the way Steve worded his last statement. "The Mist has been around for centuries, at least," she said. "I'm certain we will be fine with the precautions we have in place, as far as that is concerned."
wontdoanyless: (small smile)

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-21 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Not something that can easily go away, even if we all like it to be." He was idealistic, but not so much that he was out of touch with reality. Steve wasn't expecting that everything will be fine with the world, not even in the future.

"Oh, you guys are already used to it, huh?" He smiled a little, well it was good that they at least tried to make the best of things. The creation of those airships sounded really neat. "Do any of these cards have monsters that spawn from the Mist?" He looked over at the different drawings, some ranging from not too bad to really uh, threatening.
dragoncrest: (neutral)

[personal profile] dragoncrest 2013-12-21 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Many of them," Freya confirmed. "I haven't met a few of them, but I am familiar with monsters such as these." As she said it, she picked up two cards to hand to Steve--one bearing the image of a strange-looking cactus with limbs, and the other with a fiery monster with sharp teeth.
wontdoanyless: (say that again)

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-21 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Steve looked at the unusual cactus shown on the card, the creature sorta looked like it was always surprised...

"That cactus can walk around and... fight?" Of course a normal cactus was a living thing and all, but not like this. They definitely didn't have a mouth for one. "And that one sorta looks like a floating fireball." He had the best observations. Although, Steve hadn't really seen monsters like this before.

"That is a cactuar. They attack by throwing their needles," she explained. "The other we call a bomb, because as you fight them, they attempt to explode. We tend to avoid them if we aren't certain we can beat them quickly."

Explaining what a bomb was to someone felt odd, even though she'd been here for months and had done it a few times already. Monsters were so common to her, and to come to a place where they didn't exist, or at least weren't widespread...

"I admit it's odd to think there are other worlds with no monsters. I'm assuming yours has none?"
wontdoanyless: (Default)

[personal profile] wontdoanyless 2013-12-22 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Um, they sure sound dangerous..." A cactus that throws needles and a monster that explodes. Yep, definitely dangerous.

"No monsters in the traditional sense. But some humans make up for that." He only had to think about World War II as an example of human depravity. And it was just one of many examples, if Steve wasn't lying to himself about it.

"I've no doubt," she replied. "But I'm glad that you don't have to face things like these often." Even if there were people in his world like the queen of Alexandria, who'd started a war out of pure greed, there was the possibility he wouldn't have to face that sort of thing. Monsters were more predictable, but they were a constant threat for the people of Gaia.

"Travel must be much easier for your world," she commented, trying to change the subject. "Have you been many places?"
